First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Easter Sunday!

Today is a happy and special day indeed for all followers of the Christian faith. In fact it is the most important day in the Christian calendar. It is the day when the resurrection of Jesus Christ is celebrated.

The celebration of Easter however is a movable feast and the actual timing of the festival was decided at the council of Nicea in 325AD. It was decided that Easter would be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox. Consequently Easter Sunday can arrive as early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th.

The celebration of Easter had a pre-Christian origin which was the festival in honour of Eostre, the Teutonic dawn goddess, also known as the spring goddess and goddess of fertility. Rabbits and eggs are obvious links to fertility and these still form an important part of today’s Easter celebrations.

There are many traditions and practices associated with the celebration of Easter, not least rabbits, eggs and bells.

Rabbits are prolific breeders, reaching sexual maturity early and enjoying it frequently! They have large litters several times each year, hence the expression “breeding like bunnies”.

Eggs were forbidden to Catholics during the fasting of lent which is why so many appear on Easter Sunday!

Church Bells were silenced on Good Friday out of respect for the death of Jesus and rang again on Easter Sunday to celebrate the resurrection. The church bells were supposed to have gone to Rome and flown back on Easter morning loaded with eggs. In France and Belgium the eggs are dropped from the sky and land in gardens to be found by gleeful children on Easter morning. Hunting for chocolate eggs on Easter Sunday is certainly one way to get the kids up early for church!

There are few events worthy of note that have happened on this day in times past.

Today is a happy day for Brits everywhere because it was on this day in 1606 that the Union Jack was adopted as the flag for Great Britain. Referring to his beloved country, at a meeting in Europe, who was it who said, “And when I say Great I ****** well mean Great!” Answers to Nomanda, please.

Flying high in a different way today in 1905 were the Swiss brothers, Dufaux, who on this day tested their first helicopter. Of course good old Leonardo Da Vinci had the idea a few centuries previously but couldn’t get it off the ground!

Grinding out their skills in another way today in 1930 were the international cricketers of the West Indies and England who decided to call the fourth test match a draw after 9 days play. In fact one of the participants, Wilfred Rhodes, was so impressed with the performance that he decided that today would be a good time to hang up his boots at the age of 52. Good decision, Willy, as Mr Bradman was on his way from Australia later in the year to show the English team a thing or two!

Taking a new look at things today in 1961, Yuri Gagarin, was the first man to orbit the earth in Vorstok 1. “Look, there’s my house, down there!

Our first birthday greetings today go to our Belgium readers starting with an unusual one. It was on this day in 1928 that saw the birth of Brooklyn Supreme, a Belgian stallion. He is reputed to have been the world’s heaviest horse weighing in at an impressive 1,450 kilograms. I believe that is when he was fully grown! Reminds me of the “Geordie” alphabet, Hay’s for Horses.

Our other famous Belgian birthday boy today is Raymond Ceulemans (1937) the prolific 3 cushion billiard player and winner of countless titles. He was knighted for his achievements by the King of Belgium. For those who don’t know the game of 3 cushion billiards, don’t bother finding out, it’s very difficult, and there aren’t even any pockets in the table!

Our last birthday celebrity is Alex Briley (1951) the vocalist of the Village People and whether you prefer “In the Navy” or “YMCA” Nomanda has both for your further enjoyment!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

11 November - Historical Events and Special Events

Gemstone of the Month

Topaz

Flower of the Month: Chrysanthemum

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

On the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month we will remember them.” It is 90 years ago today since the end of WWI.

And of course so we should remember all those who have been killed in battle as well as all the civilians who died in the two World Wars. How we remember them and whether it should be limited to one or two minutes silence on the day is a matter of personal conviction. Millions have died in wars and our best tribute to those who have died would be to ensure that such conflicts never happen again.

Trying to ensure that if he couldn’t put out the fire at least he had a chance of escaping from it D McCree patented his portable fire escape on this day in 1890. When I came across this piece of interesting information my immediate visualisation of a portable fire escape was a ladder. In fact that’s exactly what it is! Well done Mr McCree!

One of Nomanda’s favourite paintings by one of our favourite artists, the “Irises” by Van Gogh was sold in auction on this day in 1987 for a record $53.6 million. It reminds me of the joke about the great man being pursued through the fields in France by a wealthy banker wanting to buy his painting the “Sunflowers” from him. As the offer price escalated out of all proportion Van Gogh asked the banker who would see his painting. He was told that it would be hung in the bank’s boardroom and that all their wealthy customers and the bank directors would be the lucky ones to view it. On learning this Van Gogh told the guy to go away and stop pestering him as he wanted his paintings to be shown to a much wider and simpler audience! Nice story!

The notebook of another great man, Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Codex”, was bought on this day in 1994 by Bill Gates for $30.8 million. Some of the information contained in the notes shows just how far ahead of his time Da Vinci really was.

And for those of you who like bits of useless information this day in 1999 was apparently the last “upside down date” until 1st January 6000! Fascinating!

The American actor Robert Ryan (1909 – 1973) is our first birthday celebrity today. He’s played lots of hard men and villains but Nomanda’s favourite characters are in his war movies like the “Dirty Dozen” and the “Longest Day”.

The lovely actress Demi Moore (1962) is our next birthday guest? She’s done some pretty hot stuff in her time and we wish her a great bash today!

Our final birthday wishes go to the talented Leonardo DiCaprio (1974). He’s done some titanic performances in his time!

13 August - Historical Events and Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Agate

Flower of the Month: Gladiolus

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

August 13th is International Left Hander’s Day so all “lefties” go out and celebrate your very own special day! Apparently around 7% - 10% of us are left handed and today is the day to celebrate your left handedness. There are those lefties who use this day to demonstrate how difficult it is to be left handed in a right handed world, but it’s never really troubled Nomanda. Yes I’m one! In fact Nomanda has to say that in most of my life my left handedness has been an advantage rather than a problem, particularly in the sports arena. Nomanda may be a bit different to “normal” lefties in that I am only left handed when just one hand is required for a task. I throw a ball with my left hand but play golf right handed! Any way we lefties are in good company and here are a few of the more celebrated lefties through the years; Alexander the Great, Charlemagne, Julius Caesar, Queen Victoria, Henry Ford and last but by no means least Leonardo da Vinci! Not bad company, I think you’ll agree!

Spare a penny for the coin operated telephone that was patented on this day in 1889 by William Gray. They were a great facility in their day but sadly those days are rapidly running out as nearly everyone in the world has at least one mobile ‘phone in their pocket these days. There are still a few “public ‘phones” around at transport hubs like airports and train stations but the street corner ‘phones are rapidly either disappearing or being wrecked by vandals. The traditional British red ‘phone box is becoming so rare that some people are buying them and using them as garden features! Handy ‘phones for the Gnomes I suppose!

Not wishing to join the Olympic Games it was on this day in 1928 that the first Soviet Union Spartican Games began. The choice of the name is interesting as based on its etymology; the Olympic Games implied westernism and capitalism, whereas “Spartacus” was the leader of the Roman slave revolution! It was not to last and eventually the Soviet Union joined the Olympic movement and the Games have been the better for it.

In a curious combination of events it was on this day in 1963 that the left handed striker Warren Spahn set the left hander strike out mark at 2,382 (American cousins, please tell Nomanda what this means!), Bert Campaneris of Daytona pitched ambidextrously, and the construction of the Berlin Wall began!

Our birthday celebrities today start with William Caxton (1422 – 1492) the first English printer and retailer of books. Where would we all be without him?

Next up for birthday honours is the famous female sharpshooter and showgirl Annie Oakley (1860 – 1926). Using a .22 calibre rifle from a distance of 27 metres Annie could split a playing card side on and put another 5 or 6 bullets in it before it touched the ground! Sharp shooting, Ma’am!

The prodigious film director Alfred Hitchcock (1899 – 1980) is our next celebrity today. The master of the psychological thriller “The Birds” and “Psycho” still give me the willies! I loved the way he always managed to get a cameo of himself in front of the camera in nearly every film!

One of the greatest golfers of all time Ben Hogan (1931 – 1997) is next up for birthday honours. If you’re having problems with your golf swing take a lesson from Ben, the king of the swing!

The controversial comedian Bernard Manning (1931 - 2007) is next up. Love him or hate him? You choose!

The heavy metal rocker Ian Haugland (1964) will be having a few bevies with his mates from Europe at his birthday bash today. I hope it’s not his final countdown!

Our final birthday boy Alan Shearer (1970) may be downing a few Newcastle Brown Ales at his bash today! Cheers, Alan!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!
