13 August - Historical Events and Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Agate

Flower of the Month: Gladiolus

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

August 13th is International Left Hander’s Day so all “lefties” go out and celebrate your very own special day! Apparently around 7% - 10% of us are left handed and today is the day to celebrate your left handedness. There are those lefties who use this day to demonstrate how difficult it is to be left handed in a right handed world, but it’s never really troubled Nomanda. Yes I’m one! In fact Nomanda has to say that in most of my life my left handedness has been an advantage rather than a problem, particularly in the sports arena. Nomanda may be a bit different to “normal” lefties in that I am only left handed when just one hand is required for a task. I throw a ball with my left hand but play golf right handed! Any way we lefties are in good company and here are a few of the more celebrated lefties through the years; Alexander the Great, Charlemagne, Julius Caesar, Queen Victoria, Henry Ford and last but by no means least Leonardo da Vinci! Not bad company, I think you’ll agree!

Spare a penny for the coin operated telephone that was patented on this day in 1889 by William Gray. They were a great facility in their day but sadly those days are rapidly running out as nearly everyone in the world has at least one mobile ‘phone in their pocket these days. There are still a few “public ‘phones” around at transport hubs like airports and train stations but the street corner ‘phones are rapidly either disappearing or being wrecked by vandals. The traditional British red ‘phone box is becoming so rare that some people are buying them and using them as garden features! Handy ‘phones for the Gnomes I suppose!

Not wishing to join the Olympic Games it was on this day in 1928 that the first Soviet Union Spartican Games began. The choice of the name is interesting as based on its etymology; the Olympic Games implied westernism and capitalism, whereas “Spartacus” was the leader of the Roman slave revolution! It was not to last and eventually the Soviet Union joined the Olympic movement and the Games have been the better for it.

In a curious combination of events it was on this day in 1963 that the left handed striker Warren Spahn set the left hander strike out mark at 2,382 (American cousins, please tell Nomanda what this means!), Bert Campaneris of Daytona pitched ambidextrously, and the construction of the Berlin Wall began!

Our birthday celebrities today start with William Caxton (1422 – 1492) the first English printer and retailer of books. Where would we all be without him?

Next up for birthday honours is the famous female sharpshooter and showgirl Annie Oakley (1860 – 1926). Using a .22 calibre rifle from a distance of 27 metres Annie could split a playing card side on and put another 5 or 6 bullets in it before it touched the ground! Sharp shooting, Ma’am!

The prodigious film director Alfred Hitchcock (1899 – 1980) is our next celebrity today. The master of the psychological thriller “The Birds” and “Psycho” still give me the willies! I loved the way he always managed to get a cameo of himself in front of the camera in nearly every film!

One of the greatest golfers of all time Ben Hogan (1931 – 1997) is next up for birthday honours. If you’re having problems with your golf swing take a lesson from Ben, the king of the swing!

The controversial comedian Bernard Manning (1931 - 2007) is next up. Love him or hate him? You choose!

The heavy metal rocker Ian Haugland (1964) will be having a few bevies with his mates from Europe at his birthday bash today. I hope it’s not his final countdown!

Our final birthday boy Alan Shearer (1970) may be downing a few Newcastle Brown Ales at his bash today! Cheers, Alan!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
