11 November - Historical Events and Special Events

Gemstone of the Month

Topaz

Flower of the Month: Chrysanthemum

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

On the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month we will remember them.” It is 90 years ago today since the end of WWI.

And of course so we should remember all those who have been killed in battle as well as all the civilians who died in the two World Wars. How we remember them and whether it should be limited to one or two minutes silence on the day is a matter of personal conviction. Millions have died in wars and our best tribute to those who have died would be to ensure that such conflicts never happen again.

Trying to ensure that if he couldn’t put out the fire at least he had a chance of escaping from it D McCree patented his portable fire escape on this day in 1890. When I came across this piece of interesting information my immediate visualisation of a portable fire escape was a ladder. In fact that’s exactly what it is! Well done Mr McCree!

One of Nomanda’s favourite paintings by one of our favourite artists, the “Irises” by Van Gogh was sold in auction on this day in 1987 for a record $53.6 million. It reminds me of the joke about the great man being pursued through the fields in France by a wealthy banker wanting to buy his painting the “Sunflowers” from him. As the offer price escalated out of all proportion Van Gogh asked the banker who would see his painting. He was told that it would be hung in the bank’s boardroom and that all their wealthy customers and the bank directors would be the lucky ones to view it. On learning this Van Gogh told the guy to go away and stop pestering him as he wanted his paintings to be shown to a much wider and simpler audience! Nice story!

The notebook of another great man, Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Codex”, was bought on this day in 1994 by Bill Gates for $30.8 million. Some of the information contained in the notes shows just how far ahead of his time Da Vinci really was.

And for those of you who like bits of useless information this day in 1999 was apparently the last “upside down date” until 1st January 6000! Fascinating!

The American actor Robert Ryan (1909 – 1973) is our first birthday celebrity today. He’s played lots of hard men and villains but Nomanda’s favourite characters are in his war movies like the “Dirty Dozen” and the “Longest Day”.

The lovely actress Demi Moore (1962) is our next birthday guest? She’s done some pretty hot stuff in her time and we wish her a great bash today!

Our final birthday wishes go to the talented Leonardo DiCaprio (1974). He’s done some titanic performances in his time!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

7 August - Historical Events and Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Agate

Flower of the Month: Gladiolus

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Have you ever tried to step in to a revolving door and either got caught up in the thing or jumped back at the last minute, or tried to get out of one and not quite made it? Or, even worse before they became automatically powered got in one and then couldn’t push the cursed thing around! Well Nomanda has done all of the above and would like to share with you the inventor of these dreadful contraptions, Theophilus Van Kannel, who patented the revolving door on this day in 1888. Nomanda has done a bit of translation work in the past and frequently came across other translators who used the word “revolting door”! Maybe they got it right! Revolving doors are just one degree better than the “automatic” opening doors that open when you break the beam. Except that in some cases they don’t and you end up with your nose up against the glass wondering when it will do its stuff!

The recruiting poster to encourage men to join up and fight in WWI featuring Lord Kitchener was launched on this day in 1914 and spread across the whole of the UK. He had recently been appointed Secretary of State for War by the Prime Minister H H Asquith and the recruitment effort succeeded in attracting hundreds of thousands of young men to join the Army. Most of the recruits would soon lose their lives in that disastrous conflict. His performance as Secretary of State for War was dreadful demonstrated by his questioning by MP’s on 4th June 1916 when he admitted that of the 2 million rifles he had ordered from various American arms manufacturers only 480 had been delivered at that time with correspondingly similar small quantities of ammunition! The WWI “Black Adder” series humorously depicts the complete incompetence of the officers involved in the whole affair.

Sometimes in life it’s better to shut up and say nothing! Ably demonstrating this principal it was on this day in 1961 that the Soviet premier, Khrushchev, predicted that the economy of the USSR would surpass that of the USA. The USSR is no longer, and it didn’t anyway!

Balancing a different set of books it was on this day in 1974 that the Frenchman Philippe Petit walked a tightrope strung across the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. Apparently he didn’t get permission to do the stunt but just went out and did it! Well done, Philippe!

First up for birthday honours is Georg Stiernhielm (1598 – 1672). He would not have normally attracted Nomanda’s attention except for the fact that he is attributed as being “the father of Swedish poetry” and anyone who can achieve that distinction deserves a mention. I know a tiny bit of the language which I can only describe as “hurdy gurdy” and anyone who can make it rhyme deserves a medal!

The luckless dancer, courtesan, and perhaps spy, Mata Hari (1876 – 1917) was born on this day. If she was a spy the evidence suggests that she was employed by both the French as well as the Germans. She was executed by the French in 1917.

The comedian Alexei Sayle (1952) will be stretching his already too small suit at his birthday bash today. Not everybody’s cup of tea but he can be funny sometimes. What do you think?

Finally we’ll ask Jacquie O’Sullivan (1960) to get together with her Bananarama mates to give us a birthday song!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

3 August - Historical Events and Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Flower of the Month: Gladiolus

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

In today’s society where everyone is encouraged to eat healthily and exercise frequently it’s comforting to learn that the current obsession with body weight and fat is not a new thing! It was on this day in 1108 that Louis VI of France, known as “The Fat One” and if you have a look at him you’ll see why, was crowned King of France. Of course things were a lot different in those days and he couldn’t make it to Reims where he was supposed to be crowned as his half brother stopped him getting there, but had to settle for the ceremony at Orleans where he could get to! No Big Macs at the reception so I guess they just devoured a few sheep, cows, pigs, chickens and things!

Just up the road at Paris it was on this day in 1829 that the opera “William Tell” written by Rossini premiered. In the distant past Nomanda could play this on the piano and just loved it, so let’s have a rousing listen! It’s great!

The 3rd August 1914 was a busy day of “diplomacy” in WWI. It began by the Germans asking the Belgians if their army could march across Belgium. I can imagine the conversation,

Ve vould like our army to march across your country, OK?”
No!
Fine, ve declare var on you!
Bloody hell, no need to take it like that!

The French got wind of what was going on and their fleet set sail for North Africa!

Germany invaded Belgium and declared war on France, Great Britain declared war on Germany, and the Turks signed up with the Germans!

Quite a busy day, really!

In what would seem to be an exercise in overkill it was on this day in 1921 in Troy Ohio that the first aerial crop-dusting took place. Caterpillars were the reason for the drastic action and I’m sure the sound of the plane flying low over them was just as frightening as the “dust”! They all got up and moved into the next field. “I’m not living in a flight path, let’s get out of here!

The USS Nautilus began its crossing under the arctic ice cap on this day in 1958. It was to be some time before it emerged on the other side and the event has been immortalised by one of Nomanda’s favourite comedians, Bob Newhart.

To celebrate the start of the summer holiday another funny man, Allan Sherman released his record "Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda" on this day in 1963; If you haven’t heard it, here it is!

I feel sorry for John Sain who on this day in 1983 built his 3.91 metre high house of cards because there were to be others, notably Brian Berg, who went on to build even bigger and better jobs. The one that caught Nomanda’s attention was the 129 story high job! In fact Brian is so good at it that it is now his full time job!

Our favourite US president, George W Bush, was to get the Republican Party’s nomination to run for the presidency on this day in 2000. He really is quite a funny guy!

Another of Nomanda’s favourite funny guys, Terry Wogan (1938) will be sinking a pint or two of the black stuff today. Maybe he’ll mix it with a bit of bubbly and have himself a “Black Velvet”! Yummy! He’s done lots of stuff but has become the undisputed champion of the “Eurovision Song Contest”!

Our final birthday wishes go to the guy who left his heart in San Francisco, Tony Bennett (1926). Let’s hear from him!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!
