Gemstone of the Month

Flower of the Month: Chrysanthemum

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

On the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month we will remember them.” It is 90 years ago today since the end of WWI.

And of course so we should remember all those who have been killed in battle as well as all the civilians who died in the two World Wars. How we remember them and whether it should be limited to one or two minutes silence on the day is a matter of personal conviction. Millions have died in wars and our best tribute to those who have died would be to ensure that such conflicts never happen again.

Trying to ensure that if he couldn’t put out the fire at least he had a chance of escaping from it D McCree patented his portable fire escape on this day in 1890. When I came across this piece of interesting information my immediate visualisation of a portable fire escape was a ladder. In fact that’s exactly what it is! Well done Mr McCree!

One of Nomanda’s favourite paintings by one of our favourite artists, the “Irises” by Van Gogh was sold in auction on this day in 1987 for a record $53.6 million. It reminds me of the joke about the great man being pursued through the fields in France by a wealthy banker wanting to buy his painting the “Sunflowers” from him. As the offer price escalated out of all proportion Van Gogh asked the banker who would see his painting. He was told that it would be hung in the bank’s boardroom and that all their wealthy customers and the bank directors would be the lucky ones to view it. On learning this Van Gogh told the guy to go away and stop pestering him as he wanted his paintings to be shown to a much wider and simpler audience! Nice story!

The notebook of another great man, Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Codex”, was bought on this day in 1994 by Bill Gates for $30.8 million. Some of the information contained in the notes shows just how far ahead of his time Da Vinci really was.

And for those of you who like bits of useless information this day in 1999 was apparently the last “upside down date” until 1st January 6000! Fascinating!

The American actor Robert Ryan (1909 – 1973) is our first birthday celebrity today. He’s played lots of hard men and villains but Nomanda’s favourite characters are in his war movies like the “Dirty Dozen” and the “Longest Day”.

The lovely actress Demi Moore (1962) is our next birthday guest? She’s done some pretty hot stuff in her time and we wish her a great bash today!

Our final birthday wishes go to the talented Leonardo DiCaprio (1974). He’s done some titanic performances in his time!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
