31 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

It’s NEW YEAR’S EVE and it’s PARTY TIME!

Today, or rather tonight is one of the biggest party nights of the year so Nomanda wishes all our readers a great night out or in tonight and hope you all have a fantastic time with your friends and family!

New Year’s Eve is celebrated in different ways in various parts of the world. The classic American scene are the crowds drawn to Times Square in New York where the now traditional dropping ball ceremony counting down the last seconds of the year first dropped on this day in 1907.

In England the party revellers congregate in Trafalgar Square and start their celebrations to the last year’s chimes of Big Ben at midnight. The BBC started using the chimes of Big Ben as their iconic introduction on this day in 1923.

The party revellers have a few drinky poos and the smokers light up in a fug of celebration. Smokers of the world may be interested to learn that the US tobacco industry produced 9 billion cigarettes in 1910 and by 1930 had upped their output to a staggering 123 billion. Not much chance of sticking to your New Year’s resolution of giving up the dreadful weed with all that exponential rising output and increasing temptation around!

For those of us who will be celebrating our New Year in a quieter manner and pass the time playing games together we may want to give thanks to the Charles Darrow, the guy who patented the board game “Monopoly” on this day in 1935. On the other hand we may not! Good clean fun for all the family and a chance to observe the more avaricious tendencies of your party guests! Hang on to your “Get Out of Jail Free” card in case you get stopped on the way home!

If you’ve had a few drinks we all know you shouldn’t be driving your car home after your partying and we’ve got Dr R N Harger to thank for handing the police the means of testing just how unfit we may be to drive. The “Drunkometer”, which I think is a brilliant name for the product, was first used on this day way back in 1938 by the overzealous police department of Indiana!

Obviously with all those New Year celebrations going on there are lots of groups and singers doing what they do best on this night of the year. The Beach Boys appeared in their first performance on this day in 1961 and here is one of their best!

The Monkees’ “I’m a Believer” hit the #1 spot on this day in 1966 and stayed there for 7 weeks.

And the Cars played their first gig on this day in 1976 and this is one of Nomanda’s favourites from them.

If you have a head for heights and few quid left in your pocket you may want to have a trip on the London Eye tonight on its 9th birthday!

Our birthday guests today start with Andy Summers from the group The Police. He can get a bit claustrophobic so if you are lucky enough to get an invite to his birthday bash give him a bit of space or he’ll tell you “Don’t Stand so Close to Me”!

The great folk singer John Denver (1943 – 1997) will be looking down out at the “Country Roads” with his party guests!

Slipping into her little black dress at her birthday bash will be the Chinese actress Gong Li (1965). I hope there’s not an auction at her party because she could find herself “Going, Going Gong!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
