16 May - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Lily of the Valley

Gemstone of the Month: Emerald

First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

We are always happy when food is on the agenda and today we have two food and drink celebrations! The first goes to Charles Elmer Hires, a pharmacist, who on this day in 1866 invented root beer. In fact he copied the idea from the landlady of the place where he spent his honeymoon, but who cares! He was going to call it root tea, but correctly calculated that the word beer would make it more marketable. Sadly it doesn’t make it more drinkable!

The next food invention on this day in 1891 by George A Hormel & Co was none other than our favourite dish of the day, the one and only SPAM! This pink coloured luncheon meat blob is just the thing for the working lunchbox and has been hungrily devoured by millions of poor sods who couldn’t be bothered to make a proper sandwich! Nevertheless it still appears every day on billions of computer screens! Thanks, George!

In a typical Vatican gesture of too little too late it was on this day in 1920 that they decided to canonize Joan of Arc and make her a Saint. Well done!

Despite the fact that aeroplanes had been flying around for some time by now remarkably it was on this day in 1936 that the first air hostess appeared on the scene. Her name was Daphne Kearley and she worked on the Air Dispatch’s “Dawn Express” from Croydon, London to Le Bourget, France. During the two and a half hour flight she had to mix drinks and cook and serve the food. As if that was not enough she also had to be able to speak French, be able to take dictation and be able to use a typewriter. The businessmen on board expected their letters all nicely typed up at the end of the journey. None the wonder the flight took so long. I bet that half of the time of the flight was spent in a “holding” position so that Daphne could finish her typing! Thank God it wasn’t a jumbo jet; they’d be up there all day!

There was no holding back Jim Laker on this day in 1956 when playing for Surrey he took all 10 of the Australians wickets for just 88 runs. His final match figures were 19 for 90. Not at all bad, Jim! Well bowled!

The Beach Boys released their album “Pets Sounds” on this day in 1966 and “Wouldn’t it be Nice” to hear one of their songs! Brilliant!

Now here’s a one for the Vatican to consider because it was on this day in 1986 that “Bobby Ewing” came back from the dead. Will he be up for a canonization in a few hundred years time, I think not!

In a remarkable double act on this day in 1988 the US Supreme Court ruled that trash could be searched without a warrant, but with rubber gloves, I suppose! And on the same day in a report from the Surgeon General, C Everett Koop, he revealed that nicotine was as addictive as heroin. All I can say is that he obviously had never tried the stuff himself as if he had he would have known already!

Having recovered from the baseball game and her host George Bush, it was on this day in 1991 that HRH Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to address the US Congress. I bet she didn’t tell them how much she’d enjoyed the previous day’s game!

Birthday celebrities today start with an Italian lady, Maria G Agnesi (1718 – 1799) who was a mathematician and who is renowned for her formula for the curve. To all our mathematicians we believe it is: xy=a,a-y.

Next up for birthday wishes is Henry Fonda (1906 – 1982). Amongst his many films Nomanda likes his westerns best.

Another great performer, this time on the piano, Liberace (1919 – 1987) was born on this day. As time went on his performances got more and more extravagant and Nomanda likes his “candelabra era” best! (you choose a clip, please, x)

Another celebrated actor, Pierce Brosnan (1952) was born on this day and has played several “James Bond” roles including “Golden Eye”.

Our final birthday wishes go to Janet Jackson (1966) and Michael’s sister who seems to go from hot to blob at the gulp of a MacDonald. Eat more spam, ma’am!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

If ‘60’s music is your thing then join with Nomanda in celebrating some classic ‘60’s hits that were on the record shelves way back then!

First up the Beach Boys introduced their particular musical style with “Surfin” on this day in 1962 and it doesn’t get much more ‘60’s than them!

The Beatles
weren’t going to be out done by their American rivals when they released “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields” on this day in 1967.

Sadly if you are not a fan of ‘60’s music then you won’t be very impressed with Nomanda’s blog today as those songs are about the only things worth mentioning!

Our birthday celebrities are a bit more promising starting with the French physician Rene Laennec (1781 – 1826) the inventor of the stethoscope. It became the doctors’ chain of office and is still very much the same as the day he invented it!

Something else that is very much the same as the day he wrote it, our next celebrity is the Australian Andrew Barton “Banjo” Paterson (1864 – 1941) the composer of “Waltzing Matilda” and it doesn’t get much more Aussie than that!

Well maybe it does because one of Australia’s favourite sons, Barry Humphries (1934) also has his birthday today! I wonder how many of his beloved “possums” will turn up to his birthday bash!

The singer songwriter and all round musician, Gene Pitney (1941 – 2006) is our next birthday celebrity and is best remembered for his classic song “24 Hours From Tulsa”.

Our final birthday celebrity is the often misunderstood spoilt brat Paris Hilton (1981). Don’t bother sending Nomanda an invitation as I won’t be able to make it!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

31 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

It’s NEW YEAR’S EVE and it’s PARTY TIME!

Today, or rather tonight is one of the biggest party nights of the year so Nomanda wishes all our readers a great night out or in tonight and hope you all have a fantastic time with your friends and family!

New Year’s Eve is celebrated in different ways in various parts of the world. The classic American scene are the crowds drawn to Times Square in New York where the now traditional dropping ball ceremony counting down the last seconds of the year first dropped on this day in 1907.

In England the party revellers congregate in Trafalgar Square and start their celebrations to the last year’s chimes of Big Ben at midnight. The BBC started using the chimes of Big Ben as their iconic introduction on this day in 1923.

The party revellers have a few drinky poos and the smokers light up in a fug of celebration. Smokers of the world may be interested to learn that the US tobacco industry produced 9 billion cigarettes in 1910 and by 1930 had upped their output to a staggering 123 billion. Not much chance of sticking to your New Year’s resolution of giving up the dreadful weed with all that exponential rising output and increasing temptation around!

For those of us who will be celebrating our New Year in a quieter manner and pass the time playing games together we may want to give thanks to the Charles Darrow, the guy who patented the board game “Monopoly” on this day in 1935. On the other hand we may not! Good clean fun for all the family and a chance to observe the more avaricious tendencies of your party guests! Hang on to your “Get Out of Jail Free” card in case you get stopped on the way home!

If you’ve had a few drinks we all know you shouldn’t be driving your car home after your partying and we’ve got Dr R N Harger to thank for handing the police the means of testing just how unfit we may be to drive. The “Drunkometer”, which I think is a brilliant name for the product, was first used on this day way back in 1938 by the overzealous police department of Indiana!

Obviously with all those New Year celebrations going on there are lots of groups and singers doing what they do best on this night of the year. The Beach Boys appeared in their first performance on this day in 1961 and here is one of their best!

The Monkees’ “I’m a Believer” hit the #1 spot on this day in 1966 and stayed there for 7 weeks.

And the Cars played their first gig on this day in 1976 and this is one of Nomanda’s favourites from them.

If you have a head for heights and few quid left in your pocket you may want to have a trip on the London Eye tonight on its 9th birthday!

Our birthday guests today start with Andy Summers from the group The Police. He can get a bit claustrophobic so if you are lucky enough to get an invite to his birthday bash give him a bit of space or he’ll tell you “Don’t Stand so Close to Me”!

The great folk singer John Denver (1943 – 1997) will be looking down out at the “Country Roads” with his party guests!

Slipping into her little black dress at her birthday bash will be the Chinese actress Gong Li (1965). I hope there’s not an auction at her party because she could find herself “Going, Going Gong!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

23 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Turquoise

Flower of the Month: Paper White

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

When Thomas Paine penned the words “These are the times that try men’s souls” on this day in 1776 Nomanda knows exactly just what he meant! Despite all the research efforts undertaken there really is not very much that attracts Nomanda’s interest that occurred on this day in history.

There is a couple of interesting cricket events that happened. On this day in 1939 South Australia scored an impressive 821 – 7 against Queensland which is not a bad score in anybody’s book! And on the same day in 1981 boring Boycott became the leading Test run scorer with a total of 8,033 Test runs to his name. I’ve never said he couldn’t bat just that he took so long at it!

There’s another opportunity for a Beach Boys song as on this day in 1963 they made their first appearance on the American pop show “Shindig”.

Our first birthday celebrity is the inventor of the spinning frame Richard Arkwright (1732 – 1782) who went on to be the creator of the modern factory system. So now we know who to thank for that! Nomanda’s favourite “Arkwright” is the guy who runs the corner shop with Granville and is “Open All Hours”. If you haven’t seen it you sh sh sh should!

Our next birthday tribute goes to the first self made lady millionaire, Sarah Breedlove Walker (1867 – 1919), who made her fame and fortune selling her hair care and hair straightening products to her fellow black American women.

With the festive season almost upon us the guy who wrote the song “If I Were a Carpenter”, Tim Hardin (1941 – 1980) is our next birthday guest. Of course we will be celebrating the birthday of the guy whose father was a carpenter in a few days’ time!

The next birthday boy is Dave Murray (1956) the guitarist from the heavy metal group Iron Maiden. Bang you head to their “Number of the Beast”!

Our final birthday wishes go to the lovely Canadian model Estella Warren (1978). She helped to make Channel No. 5 famous you know!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

Happy Special 4th July Day!

Gemstone of the Month

Ruby

Flower of the Month: Larkspur

Upcoming Special Days

14 July - Emmeline Pankhurst Day

15 July - St. Swithin’s Day

The 4th JulyIndependence Day for our colonial cousins in the US. It was on this day in 1776 that George Washington signed the Declaration for Independence from Great Britain. It was to take a further 7 years before it all happened, but it did and now look at them! God Bless America!

Today is also a very special for little girls everywhere as it was on this day in 1865 that the first edition of “Alice in Wonderland” was published. The background to how the book came to be written is as curious as the book itself. Three years earlier the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (pseudonym Lewis Carroll) and a friend were rowing three little girls on the river at Oxford. To while away the time the Reverend made up a story of a bored little girl called Alice who goes off in search of adventure! One of the little girls being rowed up the river, Alice Liddell, prevailed upon the Reverend to write down the story and voila! The book has never been out of print since and has been translated into 125 different languages. If you haven’t read it you should, and if you’ve already read it, you should read it again!

Just as “Alice in Wonderland” was getting published all around the globe the Beach Boys were getting around on this day in 1964 when “I Get Around” hit #1.

Not to be outdone the Rolling Stones released “Honky Tonk Woman” on this day in 1969. A great song!

If you like rap, and I’m is still considering my position on this one. No I’m not, I hate it! Anyway for all our rap fans here is the 2 Live CrewBanned in the USA” released on this day in 1990. Enjoy!

Our first birthday tribute goes to the pin up actress of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s Gina Lollobrigida (1927). Lovely lady and still going strong!

Happy birthday wishes also to Dave Rowberry (1943 – 2003), keyboardist for the Animals and “We Gotta Get Out of this Place” is one of their best! Gone but not forgotten!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!
