23 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Turquoise

Flower of the Month: Paper White

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

When Thomas Paine penned the words “These are the times that try men’s souls” on this day in 1776 Nomanda knows exactly just what he meant! Despite all the research efforts undertaken there really is not very much that attracts Nomanda’s interest that occurred on this day in history.

There is a couple of interesting cricket events that happened. On this day in 1939 South Australia scored an impressive 821 – 7 against Queensland which is not a bad score in anybody’s book! And on the same day in 1981 boring Boycott became the leading Test run scorer with a total of 8,033 Test runs to his name. I’ve never said he couldn’t bat just that he took so long at it!

There’s another opportunity for a Beach Boys song as on this day in 1963 they made their first appearance on the American pop show “Shindig”.

Our first birthday celebrity is the inventor of the spinning frame Richard Arkwright (1732 – 1782) who went on to be the creator of the modern factory system. So now we know who to thank for that! Nomanda’s favourite “Arkwright” is the guy who runs the corner shop with Granville and is “Open All Hours”. If you haven’t seen it you sh sh sh should!

Our next birthday tribute goes to the first self made lady millionaire, Sarah Breedlove Walker (1867 – 1919), who made her fame and fortune selling her hair care and hair straightening products to her fellow black American women.

With the festive season almost upon us the guy who wrote the song “If I Were a Carpenter”, Tim Hardin (1941 – 1980) is our next birthday guest. Of course we will be celebrating the birthday of the guy whose father was a carpenter in a few days’ time!

The next birthday boy is Dave Murray (1956) the guitarist from the heavy metal group Iron Maiden. Bang you head to their “Number of the Beast”!

Our final birthday wishes go to the lovely Canadian model Estella Warren (1978). She helped to make Channel No. 5 famous you know!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
