When it is your happy special day and whether you are celebrating a birthday or special anniversary, if you would like a mention on Nomanda’s blog just send us the details. We promise you a very special mention on this blog on your special day!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Alexander Selkirk was jumping with joy on this day in 1709 when after 4 years of being marooned on one of the Juan Fernandez Islands a ship came along and rescued him. His solitary life, survival and eventual rescue from the island would provide the inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s “Robinson Crusoe”!

Also jumping for joy on this day in 1852 were the “gentlemen of the press” on the occasion of the opening of the first British men’s public toilet in Fleet Street. Of course we all know what goes on in public toilets and I guess it’s appropriate that the first one should open in the street with a thousand flies!

Fredrich Schmiedl had the Austrian residents of St Radegund jumping for joy then diving for cover when he launched his first rocket mail missile at them on this day in 1931. I know we all eagerly await the arrival of the postman to see if there’s anything interesting been sent to us in the post but the arrival of a rocket in your front lawn would put the wind up even the most enthusiastic curtain flicker! A German rocket engineer, Gerhard Zucker, would try to convince the British Post Office in the 1930’s that rocket mail was the way forward but sadly his arguments didn’t convince the authorities. They were probably influenced by his demonstration carrying 1,200 pieces of mail that blew up in flight destroying all its contents! Nomanda thinks it’s a great pity that the concept of rocket mail wasn’t developed as the idea has merit and I would look forward to the daily bang and crater when the mail arrived!

Not jumping for joy but “Walking Back to Happiness” on this day in 1963 was the singer Helen Shapiro as she stated her UK tour with the Beatles as one of her supporting groups!

The English comedian Les Dawson (1931 – 1993) is our first birthday celebrity today. He had a face that seemed to be made of rubber and his mother-in-law and wife would bear the brunt of most of his humour!

One of “Charlie’s Angels”, Farrah Fawcett (1946), is our next birthday guest. She looks like an angel probably as a result of using all the beauty products she promoted!

The lovely musician Shakira (1977) is our final birthday guest today. Don’t worry if you make a bit of a mess of yourself at her birthday bash as I’m pretty sure there will be “Laundry Service” available!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
