Flower of the Month: Violet

When it is your happy special day and whether you are celebrating a birthday or special anniversary, if you would like a mention on Nomanda’s blog just send us the details. We promise you a very special mention on this blog on your special day!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Today is a very Happy and Special Day for one of Nomanda’s friends, Peter, who will be celebrating his birthday today! No more queuing up at the Labour Exchange pretending to be looking for a job as today he will be able to draw his old age pension and get on with the rest of his life! My guess is he will carry on doing what he’s been doing for the last few years since Nomanda met him which is to play a few rounds of golf every week, enjoy his liquid breakfasts, and stop off at a couple of local hostelries on his way home! We wish you well, Peter, and hope you have a great birthday!

If Peter could have got his hands on the real estate in southern California being sold off in chunks by Harvey Wilcox on this day in 1887 he’d have been a very happy boy. It’s now known as Hollywood!

Another land deal Peter may have gone for was the land at Broadway and Wall Street that was being sold off on this day in 1926 for the modest sum of just $7 per square inch! I don’t know how many square inches Peter would have bought but I’m guessing several!

As a sportsman Peter would not have approved of the underarm bowling incident that occurred on this day in 1981 when the Australian Trevor Chappell bowled the last ball of the innings underarm to ensure that the New Zealand batsman Brian McKenzie couldn’t score a six off it and win the match and series. It’s been referred to as “the most disgraceful moment in the history of cricket” and if you want to see it again just click on!

Knowing Nomanda’s association with Belgium Peter may be interested to know that he shares his birthday with the Belgian Charles J Sax (1791 – 1865), founding member of the Belgian-French family of instrument makers and father of Adolphe, the inventor of the Sax. Yes, Peter I have spelled it correctly, and I know that you think you invented the tooping mistake!

I bet Peter didn’t know that he shares his birthday with Clarke Gable (1901 – 1960), one of Hollywood’s greatest actors and a lady killer to boot. The only similarity between Peter and Clarke is the name of Clarke’s most famous film!

The football star, Stanley Matthews (1915 – 2000) also shares his birthday with Peter and is considered to be one of the greatest football players ever. He continued to play the professional game well into his ‘50’s largely down to his fitness and teetotal regime. Peter and Sir Stanley may not share the same lifestyles but they are both great dribblers!

Our final birthday celebrity is the English actor Peter Sallis (1921) best known for his portrayal as “Cleggie” in “Last of the Summer Wine”. Despite his convincing northern accent and behaviour he is a Londoner!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
