Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!
You might think that it’s a load of balls but veteran baseball pitcher Albert Spalding knew a thing or two about balls and business! It was on this day in 1876 that with $800 he started his Spalding ball manufacturing company. He wrote the first official rules of baseball and in it specified that only his balls could be used, if you know what I mean! He went on to make balls for tennis, basketball, golf and football obviously not wanting to put all his balls in one basket! His company is still going strong.
Another guy with a lot of balls is our favourite Danish comedian, Victor Borge whose “Victor Borge Show” debuted on this day in 1951.
The song “YMCA” by the Village People peaked at the #2 spot on this day in 1979. The song has been performed by many artists but few have been performed as well as “Monica’s” reluctant effort in this episode of “Friends”
Our first birthday celebrity today is the bassist from the group the Hollies, Eric Haydock (1943). Their song “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s my Brother" is one of their best! Nomanda has a brother and he is heavy and getting a little heavier every day!
The vocalist Johnny Cymbal (1945 – 1993) is our next birthday guest. His “Mr Bass Man” is one of his best, but I also like the song “I’m Drinking Canada Dry” too!
Our final birthday wishes go to the actress Maitland Ward (1977) best known for her character “Jessica” from the “Bold and the Beautiful”!

Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.
For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!
For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!
And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!
