Flower of the Month

Gemstone of the Month: Garnet

When it is your happy special day and whether you are celebrating a birthday or special anniversary, if you would like a mention on Nomanda’s blog just send us the details. We promise you a very special mention on this blog on your special day!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

They were cooking on gas in London’s Pall Mall on this day in 1807! Well not exactly cooking on gas but seeing by gas light as it was on this day that Pall Mall became the first street in the world to be illuminated by gas light. Nomanda’s grandmother had gas lights in her house and I can remember that it was quite a hazardous job turning on the gas and putting the match to it before there was too much gas and the whole thing exploded! The filaments that did the job were quite fragile too so I can imagine that it was delicate exercise for the guys who had to walk along the street and light up all the lamps. Then of course they had to turn them all of a few hours later! Nice work if you can get it I suppose!

I was amazed to learn that the first ski tow rope was only introduced on this day in 1934 at Woodstock, Vermont. Nomanda has done a bit of skiing in his time and it’s difficult to imagine a world without tow ropes and lifts to get you to the top of the mountain. What did they do before; walk all the way to the top? Now that’s the way to get fit! I guess they also didn’t have those nice strategically placed bars and restaurants where you could warm up and have a couple of drinks before braving the slopes once again. It makes me shiver just to think about it!

Another good way to get warm is to sleep with someone! The Rolling Stones knew all about this when they released their song “Let’s Spend the Night Together” on this day in 1967! It would still be a bit chilly if you were spending it half way up a mountain!

The guy who holds the record for the largest number of monogamous marriages, Glynn Wolfe (1908 – 1997) knew a thing or two about spending nights together! It was on this day in 1984 that he married his oldest wife, Christine Camacho aged 38. It was his 26th marriage and he married her in Las Vegas. However the Baptist minister, yes that’s right, wasn’t going to stop with Christine and he went on to complete a further two marriages before he finally snuffed it! Suffice it to say that he died without enough funds to pay for his funeral and was buried in a pauper’s grave! You have been warned!

Our first birthday celebrity is Harry Corbett (1918 – 1989) the puppeteer. His puppet called “Sooty” would probably be politically incorrect these days! However I do understand that Prince Charles nicknamed one of his army friends after the puppet! It was all good wholesome fun in black and white! Have a look at this clip. It doesn’t get much better than this!

The jazz saxophonist and jazz club owner Ronnie Scott (1927 – 1996) is our next birthday celebrity and here’s a clip of him doing what he did best!

Someone who would be no stranger to Ronnie was Acker Bilk (1929) and his beautiful rendition of “Stranger on the Shore” is here just for you!

Our final birthday boy is the singer from the group the Backstreet Boys, Nick Carter (1980) and here is one of Nomanda’s favourites!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
