Lovers of the innocent and simple things in life, and it doesn’t get more innocent or more simple than animated cartoons, will join Nomanda in celebrating the release on this day in 1959 of Walt Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty”. Here’s one of Nomanda’s favourite clips!
Translation is a difficult job. Nomanda knows because we’ve done a bit in our time and it is one of the most challenging tasks we’ve ever undertaken! Getting the correct words and phrases can be very tricky and lots of things lose their original meaning in translation. Proving the point on this day in 1964 were the Beatles who recorded in German “Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand” and “Sie Leibt Dich”. You have to agree they’re just not the same!
Wanting to hold the hand of “Wonder Woman” was layer Robert Altman who married the lovely actress Lynda Carter on this day in 1984. Being a layer I’m sure that he had a decent pre-nup clause in the marriage contract just in case he didn’t cut the mustard!
Not wanting to share his hand with the tax man the preacher Gene Profeta pleaded guilty to tax evasion on this day in 1989. Well done, Gene! Confession is good for the soul or so we are led to believe! Interesting word, that, con- fession!
Our first birthday celebrity today is the actor Tom Selleck (1945). I wouldn’t mind betting that there’ll be a Magnum or two of the bubbly stuff at his bash!
Black billionaire talk show host Oprah Winfrey (1954) will be celebrating her birthday in style today. I don’t think Nomanda will be on the guest list which is fine with me!
The actress Kelly Packard (1975) will no doubt be patrolling the beaches on the lookout for any swimmers in distress before she starts her birthday bash! Why can’t she see me waving at her? Over here, Kelly!

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!
For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!
And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!
