27 January - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Garnet
Flower of the Month: Carnation

When it is your happy special day and whether you are celebrating a birthday or special anniversary, if you would like a mention on Nomanda’s blog just send us the details. We promise you a very special mention on this blog on your special day!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

I hope it is a sign that things bode well for Andy Murray that the last Briton to win an Open Tennis Championship, the Englishman Fred Perry, won the 27th Australian Men’s Singles Open Championship on this day in 1934. Nomanda certainly hopes so as 74 years is an awful long time to wait for another British Open Champion! Mind you he still has a lot to do and although the young Scot has been doing very well recently Nomanda is concerned that he may not have the stamina for long 5 set matches. We wish him the best of luck!

I’m sure Andy’s Mum and fans will be tracking and taping his progress. The world has come on a long way in the last 60 years as it was on this day in 1948 that the first tape recorder was sold. Now they’re a basic part of every security officer’s kit, only now they’ve got pictures as well!

The longest undersea tunnel in the world, the Seikan tunnel, connecting the Japanese islands of Honshu and Hokkaido broke through and completed the pilot tunnel on this day in 1982. The tunnel is an impressive 54 kilometres long and is now sadly being underutilised as a result of cheaper air fares to make the crossing. I wonder if the investors in the Channel Tunnel were aware of that before they started their great venture!

The end of January seems to be a popular time for new shows to open. It was on this day in 1982 that “Joseph and the Amazing Dreamcoat” opened at the Royale Theatre in New York for a jumbo number of 747 performances! “Crazy He Calls Me” did not fare so well opening at the Walter Kerr Theatre, New York, on this day in 1992 and running for just 7 performances! A better title may have been “Crazy to Invest in Me”!

The author of one of the favourite children’s’ stories, “Alice in Wonderland”, Lewis Carroll (1832 – 1898) is our first birthday celebrity today. When he wasn’t writing stories for children his day job under his real name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was a lecturer in Mathematics at Oxford. Quite a multi talented man really!

The top people’s shopkeeper, Mohamed Al-Fayed (1929) is our next birthday guest. He is a man who has attracted a lot of publicity over the years and not all of it good! Despite owning Harrods and Fulham FC he is not liked by the establishment and is still waiting for his British passport which he applied for in 1970! Don’t hold your breath is Nomanda’s advice to the great man!

The drummer from the group Thin Lizzy, Brian Downey (1951) is our last birthday boy. My guess is that there’ll be plenty of blokes at Brian’s bash because I’ve heard that the “Boys are Back in Town”!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
