Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!
Sometimes life can be unfair. You’re dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t! That’s exactly what happened to Emma Snodgrass on this day in 1852 when she was arrested in Boston for wearing pants. I’m sure she would have been arrested if she wasn’t!
The US Fire Department was stepping out in their hard hats and boots as they celebrated their first annual ball on this day in 1864. It wouldn’t normally get Nomanda’s attention apart from the fact that it gives me a great excuse to play this song!
Those of you who were following yesterday’s blog will be pleased to learn that Victoria just managed to beat New South Wales by a modest innings and 656 runs on this day in 1926!
If a guy called Fred P Newton happens to come up to you and ask if you’d like to go out for a swim with him, be warned! On this day in 1930 he completed the longest swim ever, the Mississippi River, a mere 1,826 miles!
The chickens in Hong Kong were counting their chickens I suppose on this day in 1997 having successfully survived the festive season when they realised that they’d started counting too soon as the province set about slaughtering the whole lot following a breakout of bird flu! Remember the old saying!
We have two lovely singers as our birthday guests today starting with Marianne Faithful (1946). In a career spanning over 50 years this is one of Nomanda’s favourite songs.
Our final birthday girl is the actress and singer Yvonne Elliman (1951). Of all the stuff she’s done “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from “Jesus Christ Superstar” must be one her very best!

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!
For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!
And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!
If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.
