28 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Paper White

Gemstone of the Month: Turquoise

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Westminster Abbey, the place of choice for English coronations, was consecrated on this day in 1065. Strangely enough the first King of England to be crowned at Westminster Abbey was none other than the French usurper William the Conqueror, who knocked off King Harold, and who celebrated Christmas Day 1066 by getting himself all decked up and crowned and all! Cheeky sod!

Another William, this one William Finley Semple, is credited as being the guy who patented chewing gum on this day in 1869. It would become the scourge of the modern world sticking to pavements and shoes and recommended to poor sods like Nomanda who can’t / won’t give up smoking! There are few more depraving sights to my mind than watching someone chewing gum; they look so gormless, like cows chewing the cud! Cut it out all of you and flash the ash!

Nomanda always thought that the Australian cricket team concentrated all their efforts on drumming the poor old “poms” at every opportunity. However today’s research reveals that Aussie cricketers take great pleasure in rubbing anybody’s nose in it! On this day in 1905 New South Wales were all out for 805 successfully beating Victoria by an innings. And on the same day in 1926 Victoria turned the tables when they were all out for 1,107 against New South Wales! How many?!

Our first birthday celebrity today in Johnny Otis (1921) the composer of "Every Beat of My Heart” and that’s good enough for Nomanda to merit a mention!

Our next birthday guest is the intrepid Nichelle Nichols (1936) who played the communications officer “Uhara” in Star Trek!

Our final birthday celebrity is the French pianist Richard Clayderman (1953). Not many people know that he’s French but most know that he can play the piano a bit! Here’s one of Nomanda’s favourites. (you chose one, please, x)

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
