8 October - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Calendula

Gemstone of the Month: Opal

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Built in the early 1960’s the tallest building in London at that time, the Post Office Tower, was officially a “secret” until the mid 1990’s! Anyway it was opened on this day in 1965 and apparently no-one was supposed to notice!

Another icon of the 60’s, John Lennon, released his best selling single “Imagine” on this day in 1971. If you like the song, why not check out the lyrics. It’s a simple message from Lennon’s heart.

This day in 1980 marked the launch of the Mini’s “Big Brother”, the Mini Metro. Despite the fact that it was probably one if the worst cars ever produced by the Austin Rover Group over 2 million were produced most of which are now in the knackers yard!

On the same day in 1980 the USSR and Syria signed a peace treaty and just to rubber stamp it I suppose the USSR performed a nuclear test! That’s what I call a peace treaty!

The ex body builder, ex action hero actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected as Governor of California on this day in 2003. Nomanda has no idea how his previous occupations prepared him for this illustrious office but nevertheless he got it and still is the state’s “Governator”! Only in America!

The student and later master of Kung Fu, David Carradine (1936) is our first birthday guest. He still proudly responds to his young nick name “Grasshopper” from his early films!

The Australian actor Paul Hogan (1939) is our next birthday celebrity today. His best known films are the “Crocodile Dundee” series. However before he made a name for himself as the adventurous crocodile wrestler he made some great ads for his country of birth and their favourite leisure pastime, drinking beer! Who wouldn’t want to visit Australia after this commercial?

The rock guitarist of the group Procol Harum, Roy Royer (1945) will be having a few friends around to celebrate his special day today. Go steady on the drinks, Roy; we don’t want you turning “A Whiter Shade of Pale”!

The statuesque Sigourney Weaver (1949) may be inviting a few of her primate friends around to join in her birthday celebrations today. They are quite well behaved as long as they don’t get disturbed by any aliens!

I guess one of the bold as opposed to one of the beautiful, Dylan Neal (1969), will no doubt be inviting some of his better looking friends to join his birthday bash today!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
