7 October - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Opal

Flower of the Month: Calendula

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Robert Mitera was flexing his muscles on this day in 1965 standing on the 10th tee at the appropriately named Miracle Hills Golf Club, Omaha, Nebraska. He struck the ball nicely and off it sailed 447 yards to the green and dropped in the hole! OK he was aided by a tail wind of around 50 mph, but nevertheless it’s the longest hole-in-one recorded and I guess it will remain so for some time to come. Great shot, Robert! I wonder how he managed the next hole into the wind!

Obviously enjoying their fame and the wealth that came with it the Beatles turned down a $1 million offer to do a concert in New York on this day in 1965. Nice work if you can get it and even nicer if you can afford to turn it down!

The South African cleric and activist, Desmond Tutu (1931) will be helping himself to drop of the communion wine at his birthday bash today. By the way, did you know that once the wine has been consecrated it is the vicar’s responsibility to ensure that the wine is either, all consumed, or burned? That’s why the clergy are seemingly so generous with the amount they pour in the cup! If the congregation doesn’t finish it off then the task falls to the vicar! The next time you go to church stay around a bit after the end of the ceremony and watch out for the vicar’s rosy cheeks as he staggers home!

Making a living of skating on thin ice our next birthday celebrity, Jayne Torvill (1957) has delighted her fans over the years. Torvill and Dean’s winter Olympic gold medal winning performance is always worth another look.

The singer Toni Braxton (1968) will be having a great birthday party today as long as no-one turns up to “Unbreak her Heart”!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
