Flower of the Month

Calendula

Gemstone of the Month: Opal

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

We all know that time is important and that you can’t buy it! It’s also good to know what the time is especially when you’ve got meetings to attend, other people to meet and to know whether the pub will be open or not! Watches and clocks have been around some time (sorry!) to help us out with these demanding issues. However I was astonished to learn that the first self winding clock was patented by Benjamin Hanks on this day as long ago as 1783. I know the principle of the self winding watch which basically self winds on your wrist as you go about your normal day. I can only wonder what on earth one had to do to get the clock to self wind! Carry it under your arm and swing it around a bit from time to time, I guess!

In an amazing example of how to keep your voters happy it was on this day in 1961 that the President John F Kennedy advised his fellow Americans to build nuclear fall-out shelters! Did anyone really believe that in the case of a nuclear attack diving down into your self made bunker at the bottom of the garden equipped with shelves of tinned food and bottled water would make a great difference? Come on, surely it was all a wind up!

We mentioned Harry G Perry’s bicycling feat of 14,021 miles around Australia a couple of days ago, but that pales into insignificance compared with John Hathaway’s cycling tour of the world covering 50,600 miles and cycling on every continent. He completed this incredible feat on this day in 1976 and Nomanda wouldn’t mind betting that he was a little saddle sore at the end of his endeavours!

It was on this day in 1991 that Elizabeth Taylor married her 8th and last husband Larry Fortensky. Sadly, like all her other marriages this one didn’t last very long, but you can’t blame her for not trying!

The famous Norwegian anthropologist and explorer Thor Heyerdahl (1914 – 2002) is our first birthday celebrity today. His 4,300 mile voyage in his raft “Kon-Tiki” has been immortalised in books and films.

The Australian cricket all rounder Richie Benaud (1930) will be pouring the drinks for his guests at his birthday party today. After he retired from the International scene his voice from the commentary box has become a part of cricketing legend. He always expressed his opinion and sometimes got things a bit wrong. I hope you like this quote “The slow motion replay doesn’t show how fast the ball was really travelling!

Two lovely ladies share their birthdays today, Britt Ekland (1942) and Ines Sainz (1975) the popular sports presenter for Mexican TV.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
