9 October - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Opal

Flower of the Month: Calendula

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Nomanda has readers from all over the world but where Nomanda lives, in the northern hemisphere, it’s starting to get a bit chilly these days, especially at night! It’s time to put on the heating and to dash down to the bank (if it’s still there!) and ask for a loan to pay for the heating costs. It’s sad to say but heating is becoming a luxury. Just before you go to bed don’t forget to switch on the electric blanket that was first manufactured on this day in 1946. Nomanda had one of these in the past and to be honest couldn’t really get to grips with the thing. There appeared to be only two settings on the one I had, “Burnt Bum” or “Freezing Cold”! I also had this nagging doubt that if I forgot to switch it off I would get electrocuted in my sleep! Toasted Nomanda for breakfast, not a pleasant thought!

Celebrating John Lennon’s birthday (1940 – 1980) the Beatles single “Yesterday” went to the #1 spot on this day in 1965 and stayed there for 4 weeks.

The classic musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” premiered in London on this day in 1986 starring Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. It is now Broadway’s longest running musical and has made a heap of money for all concerned! It’s still worth a clip!

The Italian composer Giuseppe Fortunio Francesco Verdi (1813 – 1901) would have enjoyed a few birthday bashes singing his “Drinking Song” from “Traviata”! I wonder if he could get his tongue around his name after he’s had a few! I haven’t touched a drop yet and I’m already having a problem with it!

The English cartoonist Bill Tidy (1933) was rightly proud of his northern roots and his stories of the “Cloggies” will be fondly remembered by his many readers.

The larger than life English actor Brian Blessed (1937) will be bringing the house down with his booming voice at his birthday bash today!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
