14 October - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Calendula

Gemstone of the Month: Opal

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

The cuddly bear, “Winnie the Pooh”, the fictional character created by A A Milne, made his debut on this day in 1926. His adoption by the Walt Disney Company ensured his place in history and our hearts. A A Milne’s “Pooh” stories have been translated into many languages including Latin, for the odd Roman soldier still waiting news from the front, I suppose!

It’s easy to look back on history with 20-20 vision but sometimes events unfold that should help us to see the way things may develop. For instance the current financial crises the world is undergoing may have been spotted, and possibly avoided, if some of the senior fat cat bankers had been on the ball and looking at the dodgy investments their banks were making. Similarly on this day in 1933 when Nazi Germany announced its withdrawal from the League of Nations did nobody see what was coming? On this day in 1938 when the Nazi regime published its plans for Jewish Ghettos for all major cities did nobody notice? Maybe by this time somebody did, but of course by now it was all too late!

Presumably with little regard to the local wildlife on this day in 1953 Great Britain preformed a nuclear test at Emu Field in Australia. If there was an Emu around called Susie she would have appreciated the warning of the Everly Brothers whose record “Wake Up Little Susie” went to the #1 spot on this day in 1957. The warning came a bit too late again!

In a curious co-incidence on the same day that Martin Luther King Jr won the Nobel Peace Prize on this day in 1964, Martin Walser’s “Der Scharze Schwan” premiered in Stuttgart!

The successful American singer Linda Ronstadt sang the National Anthem on this day in 1977 at the World Series. She’s done a lot better than that and here is one of Nomanda’s favourites!

The legendary Jamaican singer Bob Marley was to perform his last concert at Madison Gardens on this day in 1980. His music and popularity live on and “I Shot the Sheriff” is one of Nomanda’s favourites!

Roger Moore
(1927) is our first birthday celebrity today. His birthday guests may include a few Saints and James’!

The fashion designer Ralph Lauren will be checking out his guests’ attire at his birthday bash today. If you haven’t got a “Ralph Lauren” polo shirt you’re nobody. Nomanda hasn’t, but I have a friend who has at least two!

The English actor Christopher Timothy (1940), famous for his portrayal of the vet “James Herriot” in “All Creatures Great and Small” shares his birthday with the evergreen pop star Harry Webb today. Harry is better known as Cliff Richard and in a career spanning over 50 years he has sold 250 million records. Of all there are to choose from, this one is one of my favourites!

Our final birthday wishes go to the Czechoslovakian model Daniela Pestova (1970) who is known as the “Chameleon” in the trade!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
