15 October - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Opal

Flower of the Month: Calendula

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

The English King, Henry VIII seemed to get just as bored with his life as he did with his wives and in order to provide a spot of sporting diversion on this day in 1520 ordered bowling lanes to be built at Whitehall. It would be nice to think that as Whitehall was to become the centre of the Civil Service that the traditional bowler hat, the costume of the civil servant, was so called because of the bowling lanes constructed there generations previously. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Anyone who has had the experience of builders will know that by and large most of them don’t turn up when they are supposed to, don’t finish the job when they said they would, and at the end of the uncompleted works present you with a bill that is way over their original estimate! You are not alone! It was on this day in 1880 that Cologne cathedral was completed just 633 years after works first started! And you think that modern builders are bad, they’ve been at it for generations!

The iconic bible puncher Billy Graham began his revivalist ministry on this day in 1949. It all started in Los Angeles in a bunch of circus tents erected in a parking lot. The meetings were originally scheduled to last three weeks but the folks out there liked him so much that it went on for eight weeks. From those early beginnings he has asked millions of people to “step forward”, has had the ear of most US Presidents, presented what some would call bigoted opinions, and done very nicely for himself, thank you! Way to go, Billy, 80 and still going strong, he must be blessed!

Billy Graham will be a stout supporter of Debbie Boone who’s “You Light Up My Life” went to the #1 spot on this day in 1977 and stayed there for 10 weeks!

This day in history has been a popular day for the handing out of Nobel Peace Prizes. On this day in 1993 Nelson Mandela and F W de Klerk got one each, and in 1990 Mikhail Gorbachev got one too. So, one black one, one white one and one ………!

Nomanda is quite partial to a glass or two of beer occasionally so I just have to include in today’s events the production of the 1,000,000,000th bottle of the amber nectar from the Amstel brewery on Curacao on this day in 1990. Just to put things in perspective, the brewery was opened in 1960 so it took them 33 years to get to this prestigious bottle. Funnily enough this is substantially less than the number of dollars being punted about by the governments of the world to solve the present financial crisis. Now if it takes 33 years to produce that many bottles of beer, how long will it take to repay to the tax payers all our money they’re throwing at the problem with apparently little success, so far? We’ll be in the red forever!

Our first birthday celebrity today is Chris de Burgh (1950) who will always be remembered for his classic “Lady In Red”.

The very funny American stand up comedienne Cathy Ladman (1955) will be entertaining her guests with her down to earth wit and humour at her party today. Take a look at this clip from the Late Late Show.

The much maligned Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York (1959), knows how to party and will be having a great birthday bash today. We wish her well!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
