Gemstone of the Month

Opal

Flower of the Month: Calendula

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Thought by many to be the origin of the superstition surrounding Friday 13th it was on this day in 1307 (a Friday) that the French King Phillip IV simultaneously arrested all the Knights Templar he could lay his hands on. The fact that he was in great debt to the Templars following his war against the English may have been a motivating factor in convincing the Pope on this course of action! The Templars were charged with numerous heresies and tortured to extract confessions. The confessions extracted, the victims were burnt at the stake. The only good news to come out of the terrible affair is that many Templars escaped and their believed fortunes were never found. What happened to the vast wealth accumulated by the Templars still remains a mystery to this day.

Samuel Bagno was off on a mission to protect people’s property and possessions by patenting his ultra-sonic burglar alarm on this day in 1953. Things have got a lot more sophisticated in the last 50 odd years but one way or another the villains always to be able to keep one step ahead of whatever is thrown at them. It’s a pity they don’t apply their talents to more honest practices! Nomanda is the eternal optimist!

The outstanding athlete of the 1912 Olympic Games held in Stockholm, Jim Thorpe, was posthumously re-awarded the medals he won at the Games. The medals were withdrawn from him 6 months after the end of the Games following accusations of “professional” status. Although Nomanda believes it is always correct to get the record straight I am dismayed that it took the IOC so long. The poor guy had been dead nearly 30 years! What a load of useless idiots, and that’s putting it into printable language!

In a world where nothing’s sacred it was on this day in 1987 that dolphins trained for military purposes were first used by the US Navy. Apparently they are good at locating lost divers, OK fair enough, and also at detecting underwater mines! Mmmm, not so sure about that one! In 2000 Soviet Russia was reported to have sold its “killer dolphins” to Iran. You have got to be kidding!

The “Iron Lady” of British politics, Margaret Thatcher (1925) is our first birthday celebrity today. She led the Conservative Party to victory in the 1979 election and went on to “reign” as Prime Minister until 1990. Her legacy is the neutering of the Trade Unions, the rise of the greediest elements of society doing whatever it takes to earn as much money as possible and the reason for Nomanda leaving the UK! We are still paying today for some of the excesses encouraged by Mrs T.

If you like “Black Coffee” you’ll have a great time with Nana Mouskouri (1934) at her birthday bash today!

Our next celebrity is Robert Lamm (1944) the keyboardist and singer of the group Chicago. If you are lucky enough to get an invitation to his party don’t worry about what time you turn up because “Does Anybody Really Know What Time it is”?

If the party is flagging go along to Sacha Baron Cohen’s (1971) bash. It’s bound to be funny!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
