12 October - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Calendula

Gemstone of the Month: Opal

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Although Richard of York gave battle in vain on this day in 1459 at Ludford Bridge he would eventually go on to control England and his heirs would rule the kingdom. His defeat would also be remembered by school children to help in the sequence of colours in the spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet!)

The lyrics of “Three Blind Mice” were first published in London on this day in 1609. The original lyrics were different to those we know today and some think refer to Queen Mary I of England blinding and executing three Protestant bishops. The question Nomanda wants answering is whether the mice chased “the farmer's wife” causing her to take retribution by cutting off their tails, or whether they ran away after she’d cut off their tails? Maybe I will never know! Maybe I will never care!

The weather in Scotland was no better on this day in 1823 than it is today. The canny Scot Charles Macintosh saw an opportunity to cash in on all the rain and invented the waterproof coat that still bears his name!

Theodore Roosevelt was getting a bit fed up with the deterioration of his official residence so he called the painters in and got them to give the place a make over enabling him to rename the “Executive Mansion” “The White House” on this day in 1901. It’s a good job he liked white because I’ve tried all the other possible colours and it doesn’t seem to do it somehow! Other colours would make it sound like anything from a brothel to a tea room!

The film director Steven Spielberg obviously liked what he saw when he was directing “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” as he ended up marrying the actress who starred in the film, Kate Capshaw, on this day in 1991.

The overweight housewife, Jean Nidetch (1923) has a lot to answer for! Struggling to follow her self imposed diet she contacted a few friends to give her support in seeing the thing through and went on to form the company Weight Watchers. Nomanda doesn’t like fat people any more (or less) than anybody else but to develop a strict regime of self imposed misery and to make loads of dough from it just doesn’t sit well on my stomach! And guess what, she sold the company to our old friend Henry John Heinz in 1978. Another slice of beans on toast, Dear, and watch out for the sparks!

One guy who didn’t seem to be a member of the Weight Watchers club, Luciano Pavarotti (1925 – 2007) would have loved to celebrate his birthday today with his other two mates from the “Three Tenors”.

Our final birthday celebrity is the American figure skater Nancy Ann Kerrigan (1969) who won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics at Lillehammer, Norway in 1994.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
