26 September - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Aster

Gemstone of the Month: Sapphire

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Not too happy with his “Imperialist” neighbour the leader of Cuba, Fidel Castro, made what has become the longest speech at the United Nations on this day in 1960. The speech attacking the policies of the USA lasted 4 hours and 29 minutes and it comes as no surprise that after having had to listen to such a prolonged verbal attack the relations between the USA and Cuba deteriorated dramatically. Diplomatic relations were severed and the discord culminated in the “Bay of Pigs” incident the following year. Castro went on to lead his country for another 48 years having recently ceded power to his younger brother in February of this year.

This day has been a good one for the Beatles as it was on this day in 1965 that Queen Elizabeth II decorated them with the Order of the British Empire, and just 4 years later they released their “Abbey Road” album. Let’s hear a track!

Today has also been an auspicious day for the airline industry as it was on this day in 1973 that Concorde flew from Washington to Paris in the breath taking time of just 3 hours and 33 minutes. Mind you by the time you’ve checked in and recovered your baggage it takes a lot longer! And on this day in 1977 Sir Freddie Laker, the doyen of cheap air fares, began his cut rate “Skytrain” service from London to New York. This flight took a bit longer than the Concorde!

We’ve got some real hot birthday celebrities today!

If you like a bit of old fashioned country and western music you’ll love to listen to Marty Robbins’ (1925 – 1982) rendition of “Devil Woman”. If you’re not, you’ll hate it!

Of course Georgie Flame (1945) singing with his “Blue Flames” may be more to your choice if you are a fan of 60 year old teenagers singing in black and white!

Flower lovers will love Lynn Anderson (1947) singing her “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden”.

And just to make sure we have something for everybody’s taste Olivia Newton-John’s (1948) rendition of “Let’s Get Physical” will not be omitted! A word of caution to our over excited readers; please do not do this at home!

Go on, admit it, it just doesn’t get any better than this!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
