Gemstone of the Month

Flower of the Month: Aster

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

The very first passenger railway track from Stockton-on-Tees to Darlington opened on this day in 1825. It was followed 5 years later with a track operating from Manchester to Liverpool and is considered to be the first “inter-city” rail service. As time went on more lines were laid and the era of the railway was born rapidly spreading throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

In a time of innocence compared to modern times it was on this day in 1937 that Charles W Howard, a Santa who worked for Macy’s department store, opened up the first “Santa Training School”. The school was set up in his barn at home and would be Santas were trained in decorum, hygiene and how to answer the children’s’ questions. Getting ready for their brief season, around 40,000 Santas from both the US and the rest of the world still pass through the school each year. It’s a long time since Nomanda has sat on Santa’s knee and whispered my most desired presents in Santa’s ear! I have to wonder whether these days children are even allowed to sit on Santa’s knee. It is very sad how much times have changed.

It was on this day in 1988, after extensive carbon dating tests, that three independent teams of scientists declared that the Shroud of Turin was likely to be dated around the 1300’s and could not therefore be the shroud that covered Jesus some 1300 years earlier. The controversy continues and tests are still being carried out. Don’t hold up your hopes that there will be any great surprises as one expert said, “The original tests may prove to be out, but not by the best part of 1300 years”!

Our first celebrity today is the hard rocker Michael Lee Aday (1947) better known to his fans as Meat Loaf. He goes like “A Bat Out of Hell” and Nomanda loves him! Here’s one of our favourites.

Another of Nomanda’s favourites, Barbara Dickson (1948) will be celebrating her birthday today. I wonder if she’ll be having her party in a “Caravan”!

The award winning actress, Gwyneth Paltrow (1972) will no doubt have a few of her friends around to celebrate her special day and they will all be asked to wear period costumes!

Our final birthday wishes go to the hot Canadian musician Avril Lavigne (1984) who in her relatively short career so far has made a lot of records and a load of money! Well done, Avril!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
