Gemstone of the Month

Flower of the Month: Aster

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Transport is one of Nomanda’s favourite subjects so the anniversary of the first British bus service on this day in 1897 deserves a mention. I guess it was early days for bus services so they didn’t have to worry about sticking to either time schedules or stopping at only bus stops. There probably weren’t any bus stops! However I would have still been annoyed if I’d been waiting for a good half hour for the bus only to see another two coming up behind!

Still on the subject of transport it was on this day in 1926 that Henry Ford announced the 8 hour 5 day week for his workers. Now I know that 1926 was a long time ago and there may be people out there who think if that was enough work in those bygone days then in our modern society we should work a lot less. Despite the fact that the working week has not changed dramatically over the best part of 100 years Nomanda has observed that indeed we do work a lot less today, we just punch in the same amount of time and get paid for it!

In a curious co-incidence of events it was on this day in 1989 that Ronald Harwood’s “Another Time” premiered in London and on the same day archaeologists were opening up the grave of Titus of the Rhine in Amsterdam! I wonder what they found.

Our birthday celebrations go back a few years to start with as it was on this day in 1644 that the Danish scientist Olaus Romer was born. He was the first to accurately measure the speed of light which considering how long ago it was is quite impressive. In the early 17th century they thought that there was no such thing as the speed of light, that it could travel any distance instantaneously. Our old friend Galileo had a bash at measuring it by standing on a hill top with an assistant standing on another hill a mile away and flashing lanterns at each other. It didn’t work out as they were far too close! Romer started observing Jupiter’s moon, Io, and without going into all the details eventually worked out that the speed of light was approximately 186,000 miles per second (or 300,000 kilometres per second) which is still accepted today as being the correct speed. Great stuff, Olaus!

Generally recognised as being the “Father of the Skyscraper”, William Le Baron Jenney (1832 – 1907) was born on this day and where would we all be without him! We’d all be sprawled out with no land left, that’s where!

Mr and Mrs Michael Douglas will be having a double birthday celebration today as Michael was born on this day in 1944 and his wife, the lovely Catherine Zeta Jones, was born on the same day in 1969. We wish them both a very happy day!

The actor behind the face of “Superman”, Christopher Reeve (1952 – 2004) was born on this day. His legend lives on.

One of the “Men in Black”, Will Smith (1968) will be having his birthday bash today. A great actor and an outstanding box office success!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
