10 September - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Aster

Gemstone of the Month: Sapphire

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Although there are several different claimants for the person who invented the rickshaw Nomanda has chosen Jonathan Scobie, an American missionary in Japan, as the most likely lad who is supposed to have invented it on this day in 1869. Apparently he came up with the idea as a way of transporting his invalid wife around Yokohama. Personally I’ve always thought of this type of transport as somewhat demeaning, replacing an animal with a person to ferry you around. Nevertheless it seems to have been one of the few jobs available to migrants from the country into the cities and I suppose a job’s a job at the end of the day.

When you’ve got home in your rickshaw and want to settle down for a couple of hours watching the telly, the ping goes on the micro-wave and you’re all set for the evening, spare a thought for the very first TV dinner sold on this day in 1953 by the store Swanson. It may have been the first but there have been many more following!
Whatever happened to people all sitting around a table in the evening and talking to each other? Happy Days!

The evergreen singer Neil Diamond celebrated his 1st chart success with “Cherry Cherry” on this day in 1966. Not one of Nomanda’s favourites so let’s hear “Sweet Caroline” instead!

The voters on Gibraltar were sweet on their politicians when on this day in 1967 they voted overwhelmingly to stay British. The result of the poll was 12,138 for and just 44 against the proposal. I guess all the 44 who voted to go Spanish were all Spanish!

Giving the world a taste of things to come Pete Sampras beat Andre Agassi on this day in 1990 to win the US Open. Smashing stuff!

The champagne corks were popping at Boeing on this day in 1993 when they rolled out the 1,000th 747 jumbo! They’ve got bigger since, but are they any better?

One of the greatest golfers of all times, Arnold Palmer (1929) will be having a couple of birthday drinks at his 19th hole today. A legend in his own lifetime, he brought the game of golf to the world through TV.

Our first birthday lady to day is the Irishwoman Siobhan Fahey (1957) who has been with two popular groups, Bananarama and Shakespeare’s Sisters. Let’s hear one of her best!

Our next birthday celebrity is Carol Decker (1963) who can sing a bit as well!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
