Gemstone of the Month

Flower of the Month: Aster

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Just 4 years after Orville Wright made his first flight of over an hour on this day in 1908 J Vendrines put his foot hard down on the pedal and became the first pilot to fly at a speed of over 100 mph on this day in 1912. Hot stuff!

It didn’t put Paul Anka off his stride as his song “Diana” went to the #1 spot on this day in 1957. Sadly the sets weren’t very hot and the whole thing was done in black and white back in those days, but they knew a good song when they heard one!

Things had improved a bit by the time John Lennon released his “Imagine” album on this day in 1971. Great song and great lyrics!

The US tennis professional Vitas Gerulaitis was prepared to put his money where his mouth was when on this day in 1983 he bet his house that Martina Navratilova couldn’t beat the 100th ranked male professional. I’m not sure how that one turned out but a couple of years later in 1985 he was made to eat his words when he teamed up with Bobby Riggs and lost a doubles match to Martina and Pam Shriver! Whoops!

Our first birthday celebrity is the iconic “Colonel Sanders” (1890 – 1980). He was in his 40’s when he started cooking chickens to customers of his service station. Demand outstripped his modest facilities and he bought a restaurant across the road that could seat 120. It was at the age of 65 that he decided to franchise his “finger licking good” chicken formula and today there are around 30,000 KFC’s across the world where over 6.5 million of us devour the succulent birds every day! That’s an awful lot of chick chicks!

The rock bassist singer Otis Redding (1941 – 1967) made some great records in his too short life and “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” must be one of his best!

David Stewart of the Eurythmics (1952) will be keeping his fingers crossed it stays fine for his birthday party today as he downs a few pints of the local brew, Vaux. Oh no! “Here Comes the Rain Again”!

Despite the fact that he claims he just fell into acting Hugh Grant (1960) has proved to be pretty competent at the job! He has wit, humour, and enjoys a round of golf, so he can’t be all bad!

The New Zealand model and actress Rachel Hunter (1969) knows how to party so we wish her a great bash!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
