Gemstone of the Month

Flower of the Month: Sapphire

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

The Founding Father Benjamin Franklin was never at a loss for words and has left us with many quotable quotes. It was on this day in 1773 that he wrote “there never was a good war or a bad peace”. If you want to investigate the great man further then have a look at some of his quotations many of which have become common currency in today’s everyday language.

This day in 1895 was not a good day for the English Football Association as it was on this day that the famous FA Cup was stolen from a shopkeeper’s window. The original cup was never recovered and a new one was made, copied from the miniature cups given to winning players. Just as well they had those to copy!

It’s been a very long time since there was a British Grand Slam tennis champion, so let’s celebrate this day in 1933 (yes that’s how far back we have to go!) when Fred Perry won the US Open!

Everyone, except Nomanda, has one of these, the ubiquitous mobile phone! I was however amazed to learn that the very first mobile car-to-car long distance call was made on this day in 1946! Now I’ve seen some of the earlier “popular” mobile phones and you needed two hands to lift the confounded things, so how heavy was this one back in 1946? Things have come a long way since!

It would be impossible to let this day go without mentioning the tragic events of 11th September 2001. Our thoughts are with those who survived and the families and friends of those who didn’t.

The lyricist of the words of the famous British patriotic song “Rule Britannia”, James Thomson (1700 – 1748) was born on this day. The words were set to music by Thomas Arne in 1740 and it’s been sung vigorously ever since! Of course back in those days maybe the words bore some relationship to the truth, sadly no more! It is however an evergreen “Last Night at the Proms” favourite.

Bernie Dwyer (1940 – 2002), the rock drummer of Freddie and the Dreamers was born on this day. Sadly most of the group are no longer with us but the performing antics of the diminutive Freddie in black and white are a must for the few. How about “I’m Telling You Now”!

The former drummer of Culture Club, Jon Moss (1957) will be having his birthday bash today. We “Really Don’t Want to Hurt You” so we’ll not gate crash your bash!

The wonder woman with a spanner and an attitude, the actress Roxanne Biggs-Dawson (1964), better known as the engineer “B’Elanna Torres” on the star ship “Voyager”, will be celebrating her birthday with her fellow trekkers today! Keep her happy as she’s a girl with a very quick temper!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
