Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

I guess that 1st September is the end of the summer holiday and the return to work and school for most people. This would account for the fact that there doesn’t seem to have been a great deal of interest happening on this day in history. Thankfully, one of our favourite countries, Belgium, has had a couple of events that are worthy of mention. It was on this day in 1963 that the Belgian language laws came into effect causing a riot! For such a small country, both in geographic size and population, having to deal with 3 different languages is a big ask in anybody’s book. They have 3 official languages, Flemish, French and German and all official documents have to be produced in all three languages. As if that is not enough they have 3 different parliaments each representing the language focussed geographic area as well as a national parliament just for good measure. None the wonder the taxes are so high!

With such a diverse population and government tolerance has to be the name of the game. This is aptly demonstrated by their capacity to introduce laws and then completely ignore them! On this day in 1987, well before the rest of the world followed suit, they introduced a law forbidding smoking in public places. Very commendable I can hear our non smoking friends say. However nobody takes much notice and most public places are festooned with ashtrays most of which are full of cigarette ends! Brilliant!

The formidable parachutist Jacqueline Smith celebrated this day in 1978 at the World Parachute Championships held in Yugoslavia by scoring 10 straight dead centres landing on a four inch disk after jumping out of a plane, doing a bit of free falling, opening her parachute and landing on the spot! She has won a total of 37 gold medals in her career. Well done!

Clayton Moore aka “The Lone Ranger” was eventually to win the court action taken out against him to stop wearing his mask. He turned up to the court on this day in 1979 wearing a pair of sunglasses that looked very much like his mask and made his point. Well done!

Not a lot of celebrities on the birthday scene today apart from Barry Gibb (1946) the guitarist and falsetto singer of the Bee Gees. They made some great records, so let’s hear one now!

Another singer, Gloria Estefan (1957) is our birthday girl so let’s hear one from her too!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!

I love giving people the choice when getting them a gift, but at the same time want to make sure that they get something really good. Have been using www.redballoondays.com.au for gift vouchers recently and the feedback from friends has been really good.
