31 August - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month
Agate

Flower of the Month: Gladiolus

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Nomanda has a nice garden; in fact you can see a picture of it at the top left hand corner of the blog. However most of our gardening activities are restricted to flowers and shrubs. We’ve tried our hand at growing vegetables but with limited success. The problem with growing your own vegetables is that even if you are successful they all come up at once and there’s just no way you can eat you way through kilos of runner beans, tomatoes, lettuce or even cabbages! You end up giving them to your friends and neighbours, who are already over supplied, or just throw the rotting lot away! The Russian Aleksei Stachanov was to discover the truth of this when in just 6 hours of working in his cabbage patch he dug up 105 tons of cabbages on this day in 1935! I have no idea how many cabbages there are in a ton but it must have been a whole heap of cabbages! No doubt the soup kitchens were happy with their supply!

In an interesting co-incidence of events William G Cobb demonstrated the first solar powered car at Chicago on this day in 1955. And on the same day in 1971 Dave Scott became the first person to drive a car on the moon. Things have come a long way!

Another two significant events occurred on this day in 1994. The first was the withdrawal of Russian soldiers from the occupied states of Estonia and Latvia. The two states had been occupies by Russians, then Germans, then the Russians again since 1939. I wonder how long it will be before they do the same thing in Georgia.
And on the same day Sinn Fein declared a cease fire in Northern Ireland. Great News!

The veteran actor James Coburn (1928 – 2002) is our first birthday celebrity. In a career spanning over 40 years and 70 films it’s difficult to single out just a couple of his best. I guess the “Magnificent Seven” and the “Great Escape” must be up there.

The award winning actor Richard Gere (1949) is our next birthday boy. Of the many films he’s made I’m sure one of the ones he enjoyed the most was “Pretty Woman” starring with the lovely Julia Roberts.

The funny comedienne Julie Brown (1958) will be parodying at her birthday bash today. I wonder who she will choose!

Our final birthday girl is the singer Deborah Harry (1970) who parties like this!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
