Flower of the Month

Gladiolus

Gemstone of the Month: Agate

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

As soon as someone invents something there’s always another person around the corner who is going to improve it or even invent something better! So it is and so it was. This fact of life applies just as much to household gadgets as it does to weapons of war. The European leaders of their countries understood this way back in 1146 when on this day they got together and outlawed the crossbow in an attempt to live in peace with their neighbours. They believed that by outlawing the crossbow war would be ended for all time. Great shame it didn’t all work out like that.

Having left his crossbow at home on this day in 1888 Lord Walsingham took his guns to the shoot and killed 1,070 grouse in just one day. Talk about gratuitous violence! I just don’t get it. Why on earth would anyone want to slaughter so many birds?

One of our favourite airlines, Air France was formed on this day in 1933 and is still going strong providing good value for money fares as well as decent food and wine!

The Beatles
released “Hey Jude” on this day in 1968 which was to be the first record released under their “Apple” label.

Some people, it seems, will do almost anything to get their name in the record books. The Frenchman, Yves Pol, was no exception as on this day in 1987 he ran a complete marathon backwards! It took him a very respectable 3 hours and 57 minutes (better than Nomanda could do going forwards!) and the only question I have is did he start at the finish and finish at the start?

Greg Rusedski hasn’t always had the best of press so let’s mention his 2 x 141 mph serves in a match at the US Open on this day in 1997. That’s quick!

The long standing Labour politician, Denis Healey (1917) is our first birthday celebrities. Still going strong and I bet he still hasn’t trimmed his eyebrows!

The singer and ex politician Dana (1951) is our next celebrity. She’ a lovely lady with a lovely voice and even managed to win the Eurovision Song Contest way back in 1970 with “All Kinds of Everything”. I wonder if Wogan was around to witness this incredible feat!

Two other lovely ladies share their birthday today; the Dutch model Frederique van der Wal (1967) and Cameron Diaz (1972).

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
