Happy Special 28th July Day!

Gemstone of the Month

Ruby

Flower of the Month: Larkspur

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Not to be outdone by his boss, Sir Walter Raleigh who introduced the evil weed to Britain yesterday in 1586, Sir Thomas Harriot is supposed to have introduced the humble potato to Europe on this day in 1586. Nomanda always thought that Raleigh brought the spud back with his tobacco, but as they were both on the same expedition I don’t suppose it really matters! Nomanda is a great fan of potatoes, particularly sautéed and dauphinoise so thanks, Thomas!

The French balloonist and photographer, Nadar, took the first airborne photo of Paris on this day in 1858. He tethered his balloon close to the Arc de Triomphe, hung over the side and pressed the button. Great stuff!

Having had the humble potato starring today it should come as no surprise that the hamburger comes next. Louis Lassing is credited with creating the world’s first hamburger on this day in 1900. There are however many contenders for this exquisite feat of culinary creation so if you want to know more you will need to undertake further research. Whoever is responsible for the ubiquitous bun it’s certainly here to stay and weigh! Nomanda wants to know why it’s called a hamburger when there’s no ham in it! Answers, please.

Moving off the streets, no doubt to the nearest McDonald’s, it was on this day in 2005 that the IRA announced the end of armed conflict against the British. A very happy day indeed!

Our first birthday wishes go to the prolific children’s author Beatrix Potter (1866 – 1943). Her best known book is probably “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” but don’t forget all the other characters she brought to amuse children all over the world including “Mrs Tiggy-Winkle” and “Squirrel Nutkin”! A lovely lady who also worked hard to preserve her adopted Lake District.

The Flemish painter George Morren (1868 – 1941) was also born on this day and his paintings are quite wonderful.

The French painter Marcel Duchamp shares his birthday with George (1887 – 1968) and his paintings are quite awful! His painting “Nude descending a Staircase” leaves me cold and I’ve seen a lot of staircases in my time!

Our final birthday wishes go to the creator of one of our favourite cartoon characters, Jim Davis, creator of the cat with an attitude, Garfield! Thanks to Garfield the world is a better place, especially if you’re a cat! Thanks, Jim!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
