Happy Special 27th July Day!

Flower of the Month

Larkspur

Gemstone of the Month: Ruby

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Returning to England from Virginia on this day in 1586 was Sir Walter Raleigh complete with a pouch of tobacco. He was someone who seemed to be in and out of the court’s and Queen’s favour but I’m sure when he showed them the tobacco he’d brought back from his latest escapade they were all very impressed. The moment has been best portrayed by Bob Newhart and is probably bang on mark. Even though “Walt” may have had a few problems marketing his newly found leaves it was nothing to the difficulties the tobacco manufactures would face some 400 years later when on this day in 1965 President Johnson signed the bill requiring all cigarette producers to print health warnings on all their packets. Spoil sports! It’s never done Nomanda any harm, yet!

Another event that was to be even more short lived was the opening on this day in 1837 of the US Mint in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was destroyed by fire exactly 7 years later on the anniversary of its opening date in 1844. I bet the fire engines were queuing up to get at it just in case a few wet samples could be recovered and set out to dry later!

Philip Pratt would be drying the tears from his eyes if he had survived to see the “revolutionaryelectric cars that we are now all encouraged to buy to “save the planet”. He introduced his first electric car on this day in 1888 and in fact they sold well alongside the internal combustion engine ones until cheap fuel pushed them out of the market! There’s a thought! Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

In what seems to be a petty piece of judicial nonsense it was on this day in 1990 that the actress Zsa Zsa Gabor began a 3 day jail sentence for slapping a policeman. The policeman in question had pulled her over for a traffic violation and according to Zsa Zsa “behaved rudely to her”. Well I hope the policeman involved in the incident, Paul Kramer, is happy with the conviction she received! She is a lady with a sense of humour; after all she has been married 9 times, and poked fun at the incident in the film “Naked Gun 2 ½” the following year when in the opening credits she is pulled over by a policeman. She steps out of the car and slaps the red light and walks away muttering “Ach, this happens to me every time I go shopping!” Great lady and still going strong!

Slapping the Indian attack all over Lord’s on this day in 1990 was Graham Gooch on his way to his massive score of 333 runs. David Shepard would not have been surprised to see Gooch dismissed on a “nelson”! A nelson is the number 111 or multiples thereof. Why do batsmen consider a “nelson” unlucky? Because it resembles three stumps without bails!

Our first birthday wishes today go to the fantastic ice skater Christopher Dean (1958) whose gold medal winning performance with Jane Torvill at the 1984 Winter Olympics is well worth another look!

Final birthday wishes go to the lovely actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta (1968) who played the “cigar girl” in “The World is Not Enough”. She didn’t last long but she was good while she lasted! It’s all about smoking today!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
