First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Today is not only Saint George’s Day but also Administrative Assistants Day. So let’s start with Saint Georges. The patron saint of England, Portugal, Georgia (I suppose that one was obvious!), Serbia, Bosnia and Bulgaria to name only a few countries of which he is the patron saint. He certainly got around a bit! It is also on this day that the Queen of England announces the new appointments to The Order of the Garter. We are awaiting her call.

National Secretaries Week” began in 1952 and it seems to have been demoted to just one day now. It’s mainly celebrated in the US but there’s no need to tell your boss that! The custom is for contented bosses to buy their secretaries flowers, small gifts, to take them out for lunch and give them the rest of the day off. No chance of that for Nomanda, unfortunately!

In a case of the world not being quite ready for it yet it was on this day in 1867 that Queen Victoria and Napoleon III turned down plans to build a channel tunnel. I think the later investors would have agreed with their decision given the escalating costs of the present one. Did they ever get their money back in the end?

On a happier note the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre was opened at Stratford on Avon on this day in 1932 and jolly nice it is too. After the performance you can slip across the road to the “Dirty Duck” for a quick beer!

In a strange case of doing the same things on the same day it was on this day in 1962 that the first US satellite to reach the moon was launched. And just 10 years later to the day in 1972 US astronauts were walking around the moon’s surface. Didn’t find the cheese, though!

Two remarkable feats of concentration and endurance took place on this day a few years later. It was on this day in 1977 that the Czech chess grand master, Vlastimil Hort played 201 simultaneous games and only lost 10 of them. I bet the games he lost were all to child prodigies!

Not to be outdone it was on this day in 1977 that Dr. Allen Bussey completed his 20,302 yo-yo loop. Who cares, and who on earth was counting!?

Finally, in a case of taking coals to Newcastle, it was on this day in 1992 that McDonald’s opened up their first fast food restaurant in China.

Not too many birthday celebrities today with the exceptions of Shirley Temple (1928) the child actress of the 1930’s who went on to become a US ambassador and diplomat. Needed all her acting skills for that job, then!

The pioneer of Rock and Roll, Roy Orbison (1936 – 1988) was born on this day and his “Only the Lonely” and “Oh! Pretty Woman” are my favourites.

The 6 million dollar man, Lee Majors was born on this day in 1940. I wonder if he’s spent it all yet.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
