Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Today is Earth Day. Inspired by John McConnell, the first Earth Day was held in 1970 and is a day when we are all encouraged to be more conscientious of our environment and to appreciate it. It is celebrated around the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere and the autumn equinox in the southern hemisphere. So go out today and do something good for the earth; How about walking to work, picking up some rubbish on the way and doing a bit of recycling. Oh, by the way today in 1970 Flat Earth Day was also celebrated. It’s an interesting concept that has the world as a disc with the north pole in the middle and a wall of ice all around the circumference. I guess that’s there so we can’t fall off!

Doing his bit to be more environmentally friendly today in 1832 was R J Tyler who patented roller skates on this day. If some of our older readers are inspired to skate to work today and celebrate two things at the same time, so to speak, don’t forget to put your knee and elbow protectors on as it hurts when you fall over!

In a lovely example of national caution it was on this day in 1864 that the US minted the first 2 cent coin on which were embossed the words “In God We Trust”. As opposed to the US Treasury I suppose! This was re-enforced 100 years later as it was on this day in 1955 that Congress ordered that all US coins should carry the same message. You have been warned!

Money was on the mind of the renowned film director Ingmar Bergman on this day in 1976 when he fled his native Sweden to seek exile in Germany following a botched tax investigation by the Swedish authorities. Eventually he was exonerated of any offence but the event had a profound effect on him and the world lost 8 years of his talents as a result.

On a happier note in the same part of the world it was on this day in 1994 that Denmark chose to make the world’s largest lollipop. Weighing in at 3,011 pounds it was obviously a big sucker!

Birthday wishes today go to Yehudi Menuhin (1916 – 1999) the wonderful violinist and conductor who adopted Britain as his home.

Sharing this day as his birthday is Aaron Spelling (1928 – 2006) the prolific TV producer with a credited 218 productions to his name. “Beverley Hills 90210”; “Starsky and Hutch”, “Fantasy Island” and “Charlie’s Angels” are amongst his best known works.

Jack Nicholson, renowned for his dark themed portrayals of neurotic characters was born on this day in 1937. “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”, “Shining” and his performance as the Joker in “Batman” are Nomanda’s favourites.

Our final birthday wishes today go to Sabine Appelmans (1972) the well known Belgian tennis star and the little girl who claimed to be left handed when she first started playing so she could play in the same group as her left handed friend. It all worked out very well for her in the end!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
