Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Today is “Primrose Day” and is a day in honour of the memory of one of Queen Victoria’s best loved Prime Ministers, Benjamin Disraeli (1804 – 1881). Primroses were one of Disraeli’s favourite flowers and Queen Victoria sent bouquets of them to his funeral. Look out for them in the woodlands near you and spare a thought for one of England’s most flamboyant PM’s.

Not a particularly happy day for the Spanish fleet preparing to invade England because Sir Francis Drake chose this day in 1587 to sail into Cadiz and sink it. The story has it that Elizabeth wanted to call the job off but was too late as Drake had already set sail and couldn’t be contacted. Good story, Ma’am!

The Treaty of London constituted Belgium as an independent state on this day in 1839 and made Luxembourg a Grand Duchy. Great beers, chocolates and banks, didn’t they do well!

Two notable events took place on this day in 1967. “Casino Royale” premiered, and the Beatles signed a contract that they would stay together for another 10 years. Pity they didn’t!

Another double event of political correctness took place on this day in 1982 that saw the announcement of Sally Ride as the first female astronaut and Guion Bluford as the first black astronaut.

Speed was the order of the day on this day in 1987. Whilst Jacqueline Blanc was setting the women’s downhill ski speed record at an impressive 124.9 mph, Gregory Robertson was doing a 200 mph free fall to save an unconscious skydiver. Well done both of you!

Finally in a case on the long arm of the law becoming the strong arm of the law, and getting caught at it, on this day in 1994 Rodney King was awarded $3.8 million in compensation for the beating he received at the hands of the police. I bet that softened the blows a bit!

Birthday greetings today go to Ole Evinrude (1877) the inventor of the outboard marine engine. The untouchable Elliot Ness (1903 – 1957) was born on this day much to the regret of Mr Al Capone!

The well loved cricketer and umpire, Harold “Dickie” Bird will be celebrating his birthday today (1933), 76 and not out!

Dudley Moore, (1935 – 2002) was born on this day. His celebrated performances with his friend, Peter Cook and his roles in films in “10”, “Arthur” and “Bedazzled” will ensure him a place in our hearts. He was also quite a heart throb in his time and was known amongst his friends as the “Sex Thimble”!

Alan Price
, the celebrated rock keyboardist of the “Animals” and the “Alan Price Set” celebrated his birthday today (1942). Let’s hear their great “House of the Rising Sun”!

Finally one of our favourite BBC sports presenters and ex tennis player, the lovely Sue Barker, will be celebrating her birthday today (1956).

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
