On this day in 1889 Mr Eiffel opened up his 300 metre monument in the centre of Paris to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the French revolution. It has been a landmark tourist attraction ever since.
A few years later in 1896 on this day one Whitcomb Johnson patented the zip. I guess it did away with all those button but depending on where the zip is used it should sometimes come with a health warning!
Perhaps Jimi Hendrix concerts should come with a health warning as it was on this day in 1967 that Jimmy Hendrix first performed his party piece of burning his guitar at his London gig.
Our first birthday celebrity today is the French philosopher René Descartes (1596 – 1650) who discovered himself with his famous “I think, therefore I am” contribution to the world’s thinkers!
Herp Alpert, the renowned bandleader and trumpeter was born on this day in 1935 famed for his Tijuana Brass band. Have a listen to his version of the “Tijuana Taxi”! They don’t get much better than this!
Another musician, Pat McGlynn best known for his contribution to “The Bay City Rollers” shares his birthday on this day in 1958 and here is one of our favourites from them!

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!
For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!
And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!
If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.
