Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

April 1st! This is the happiest day of the year for all practical jokers and pranksters. Despite the fact that no-one seems to know where this tradition originated (there are however a few dull and boring theories that don’t get Nomanda’s vote) people all over the world with a sense of humour and fun enjoy teasing each other on this particular day. Tell me, what’s the best April fool joke played on you?

There have been however a few strange events and inventions that have occurred over the years on this particular day.

The internal combustion engine was patented by Samuel Mory on this day in 1803. I wonder if he had any idea just what would develop. One invention that has my vote for being maybe as important as the above must be the dishwashing machine that was first marketed on this day in 1889. All those men and women who don’t like doing the washing up have been in his debt ever since!

Paul Gauguin wasn’t joking when he set off for Tahiti on this day in 1891 to paint his famous dusky maidens. However one poor fellow, Dumitri Dan, who probably set off at the same time as PG, completed today in 1910 his 100,000 kilometre walk! Little seems to be known of where he was going or why he did it, but to walk more than the equivalent of twice around the world he must have had his reasons. Or maybe he just took a wrong turn somewhere!

Perhaps Louie Marx was joking when he launched the YoYo on to the world in 1929. But I guess the “Weight Watchers” were serious when they were formed on this day in 1946. I’ve still never seen a small person behind a diet coke!

The Ayatollah Khomeini wasn’t joking when he called for an Islamic Republic in Iran on this day in 1974 despite the fact that he had to wait a further 5 years when on this very day in 1979 it was formed following the fall of the Shah.

A few years later in 1986 world oil prices dropped to below $10 a barrel and we’d definitely like some more of that back, please! And I’m not joking!

Who was the joke on when on this day in 1991 the Warsaw Pact was dissolved, and just one year later to the day in 1992 the world’s 7 wealthiest nations agreed to give $24 billion in aid to the former USSR?

Birthday celebrities today start with Edmond Rostand (1869 ) 1918), the French poet and playwright most famously known for his play “Cyrano de Bergerac”. With a nose like that he must have had a sense of humour!

The prolific Chinese actor Toshiro Mifune (1920 – 1997) is our next birthday boy best known for his performances in “The Seventh Samurai” and “Shogun”.

Debbie Reynolds
(1932) would soon be “Singin’ in the Rain” celebrating her birthday.

And David Gower (1957) would later prove to be one of the English Cricket team’s best captains in the 1980’s and loved by cricket enthusiasts everywhere for his classy batting performances and his laconic behaviour.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
