First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!
Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!
John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress” (full title “Pilgrim’s Progress from This World to That Which is to Come”) was first published on this day in 1688 and has never been out of print since that day! It is a Christian allegory, not normally Nomanda’s favourite subject matter, and some may consider its characters and story line a bit simplistic but Nomanda has to admit that he enjoyed the book when he first read it although that was some time ago!
Another classic book that has stood the test of time, Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” was also published in this day in 1885. I haven’t read this one yet but hope to some day!
Nomanda has always admired the American standards of service and an event on this day in 1930 has enhanced my respect of them even more. I enjoy a glass of fresh cold milk, the fresher the better! Flying high to provide the highest possible standards a cow was flown and milked in a plane, the milk sealed in paper containers, and the containers parachuted to the delighted customers below. That’s what I call service! Brilliant!
This day in history also seems to have been a popular one for celebrity marriages:
1989: Steve Garvey married Candice Thomas
1994: Joe Pantoliano married Nancy Sheppard
1995: Pamela Anderson married Tommy Lee
Happy Anniversary to those of you still together!
The historian and novelist Len Deighton (1929) is our first birthday guest. His character “Harry Palmer” has been immortalised in film by Michael Caine and if you haven’t seen any of the “Palmer” films, you should! Here’s a piece to whet your appetite!
“Harry” was no angel but I’m sure he would have enjoyed Juice Newton’s (1952) performance of the song that made her name, “Angel of the Morning”.
The flying fly half of the English Rugby Team of the Will Carling era, Rob Andrew (1963) is our next birthday boy. He kicked the winning Rugby World Cup dropped goal against the Australians in 1995 just as Johnny Wilkinson repeated in 2003. He now is the Director of Elite Rugby at the RFU and if England’s recent performances are anything to go on should be getting a bit worried about his job security!
The genial gold medal hurdler Colin Jackson (1967) is our last birthday boy and if he has to leap a few hurdles to get his hands on his birthday cake I’m sure he’ll leap them in style! He now does a very good job as a commentator for the BBC.
Happy Special Day to one and all!!
If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.
For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!
For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!
And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!
If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.
