Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!
The world has come on a lot in the last 100 years. Only yesterday I saw a new hi-tech radio that works with your mobile phone that will enable you to pick up radio stations from all over the world. The figure of over 10,000 different radio channels was mentioned in the review. That’s a very long way from the first radio set, the Telimco that was advertised on this day in 1906. In the laudatory copy potential customers were assured that it could pick up radio signals for up to one whole mile! That’s what I call progress! On the other hand who on earth wants to be able to listen to over 10,000 different radio channels? That’s what I call stupid!
A plate of plastic that was to take the world by storm, the “Frisbee” was re-named and launched on this day in 1957 by the appropriately named Wham-O-Company. People throw them to each other, dogs leap in the air to catch them, and when he runs out of dinner plates, Nomanda’s brother eats off them! Only with his friends!
“All our Friends are all on board” so let’s set off on a wonderful adventure with the Beatles in their “Yellow Submarine” to celebrate the release of the album on this day in 1969.
We all know that a stitch in time saves nine, or so the saying goes, but just imagine how many stitches Barbara Sonntag could save when she went into the record books on this day in 1981 by achieving the amazing crochet stitching rate of 147 stitches per minute over an half hour period. Nomanda’s maths make it just short of 40,000 stitches saved if you had the nimble fingered Babs on your team! She can darn the holes in my socks any day!
I don’t know if Otto Bucher had any holes in his socks when at the sprightly age of just 99 he turned up for a game of golf at La Manga Golf Course in Spain. He stepped up on the 12th tee, the 130 yard par three, and scored a hole in one on this day in 1985! Brilliant, Nomanda hasn’t scored one yet and hopes he doesn’t have to wait that long to do so but nevertheless Otto’s achievement is encouraging!
I guess because he is a country boy, Trace Adkins (1962) thinks that “Ladies love Country Boys” and being a country boy myself who is Nomanda to challenge him!
Our next birthday boy is the boy wonder of the snooker table, Stephen Hendry (1969). He’s held the #1 snooker spot for 8 years and is one of the greatest ever players of the game.
Two of the lovelies from “Baywatch” share their birthday today, Traci Bingham (1968) and Nicole Eggert (1972). “Joey” from “Friends” likes watching “Baywatch” and if it’s good enough for “Joey” it’s good enough for Nomanda!

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!
For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!
And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!
