24 October - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Calendula

Gemstone of the Month: Opal

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

There are lots of 19th century firsts today so let’s get cracking!

It was on this day in 1818 that the child prodigy Felix Mendelssohn performed in his first public concert at the tender age of 9! Not only was he a competent player at this early age, by the time he was 13 he had composed and published his first piano quartet. Show off!

The world’s first football club, Sheffield FC was founded on this day in 1857. With a ground capacity of just 1,500 they are not to be confused with their more illustrious rivals, Sheffield United or Sheffield Wednesday!

The Pony Express was to become a thing of the past on this day in 1861 with the sending of the first transcontinental telegram. Pity, really!

Closet dare devil whose day job was teaching, Anna Taylor chose this day in 1901 to be the first person to go over the Niagara Falls in a barrel. She did it; she survived the stunt and went on to live to the ripe old age of 83. Not bad for a stern looking teacher!

Anna was obviously no retiring violet so I’m sure she would have liked to swing along with Benny Goodman who recorded “Let’s Dance” on this day in 1939.

Our first birthday boy is the bass guitarist for the Rolling Stones, Bill Wyman (1936). Nomanda cannot let the opportunity slip for one of our favourite songs from the “Stones” so here it is! At the ripe old age of 71 Bill is still rocking and not just in his chair!

Our final birthday wishes go to Daniel Shalikar (1988) who is not a person you want to leave your kids with unless you want to blow them up!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
