23 October - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Flower of the Month: Calendula

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

As a smoker Nomanda feels that we are forever being ostracised from society with more and more restrictions coming along every day to restrict the places where we are allowed to indulge our habit. I thought that this was a relatively new thing with pubs, restaurants and public places being only recently being added to the list. Imagine my shock when I discovered that on this day in 1690 there was a public revolt at Haarlem, Holland following a ban on public smoking! The revolt was obviously successful as you can puff all sorts of stuff in public in Holland these days including the magic dragon! Today’s smokers should take a leaf out of those revolting Dutch smokers and stand up for our rights to smoke where we want! Smokers of the world unite and light up, that’s what I say!

Walt Disney’s animated film “Dumbo” was released on this day in 1941. Although the main character’s name is somewhat disparaging he made up for it by flapping his mighty ears and being able to fly. Now what elephant wouldn’t want to do that? Sadly, the poor elephant didn’t have a lot of friends but he didn’t care as his one true friend, the tiny mouse, Timothy, went on many great adventures with him. Take a look at “Dumbo’s” first flight.

The Access credit card was introduced into Britain on this day in 1972 and heralded the start of the living on credit lifestyle that has brought many people into financial ruin and made fortunes for the banking world. Unlike most European countries where the full balance on the card has to be settled at the end of each month the Anglo Saxon version offered a paltry "minimum" payment and charged extortionate interest rates on the amount unpaid. One of the evils of our times!

Our first birthday celebrity today is Nicolas Appert (1752- 1841) the “father of canning”. His discovery of preparing food that would keep edible for some time after preparation was driven by our old friend Napoleon’s 12,000 franc incentive for an invention that would enable his troops to be provided with daily rations while on the march. The world would never be the same again!

Two celebrities share this day in 1942 as their birthday. Michael Crichton, the author of “Jurassic Park” and Anita Roddick the co-founder of the successful cosmetics company “Body Shop”.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
