16 September - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Aster

Gemstone of the Month: Sapphire

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

After much deliberation and changes of mind Thompson’s design of the Great Seal of the US was finally agreed upon and first used on this day in 1782 on a document authorising George Washington to negotiate an exchange of prisoners. The iconography and symbolism have been the source of much speculation ever since its introduction. What does it all really mean?

Changing horse, so to speak, William Durant who was a successful horse drawn carriage maker at the time founded the General Motors Corporation on this day in 1908. So he started knocking out cars and all the local horses breathed a sigh of relief!

The filming of what has become to be recognised as one of the best comedy films ever made, Monty Python’s “Life of Brian” commenced on this day in 1978. The luckless Brian spends most of his time getting into and mostly out of increasingly impossible scrapes, including attracting a large crowd of unwanted followers congregated outside his mother’s house. Sadly in the end he is captured by the Romans and despite being pardoned by Pilate a “Brian” impostor is released in his place and he spends his last moments on earth putting a brave face on things!

The Austrian body builder who has done very well for himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, became a US citizen on this day in 1983. He followed up his action hero Hollywood performances in the ‘90’s with politics and was elected Governor of California, a position he still holds, in 2003. He is locally known as the “Governator”! The farmer’s boy who couldn’t speak a word of English when he first moved to the US has done OK!

Another Hollywood actor who did well, Peter Falk (1927) was born on this day. He is best known for his detective character “Columbo” and seemed to trap most of his felons with his through away questions just as he was leaving the interview! “Oh, by the way ……” he was not as dumb as he made out!

The very funny man, Russ Abbott (1947) will be having a great time at his birthday bash today. Of all the stuff he’s done one of Nomanda’s favourites is his singing performance of “And Then She Kicked Me”!

The American Illusionist, David Copperfield (1956) will no doubt amusing his birthday guests with a few tricks at his party today. Just watch out for those laser beams, David, your stomach will think your throat’s been cut and they could ruin your appetite!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
