Flower of the Month: Aster

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

First of all a very BIG Happy Birthday to one of our youngest readers, Tom, who is a little French boy who will be celebrating his very first birthday today! Nomanda sees his face every time he visits the office where his Mummy works and he is a lovely boy. If you don’t think that Tom reads Nomanda’s blog at the age of one, then just remember that he will be able to speak French by the time he goes to school! Bright boy!

Another 785 bright boys and girls will be celebrating this day at on this day in 1952 when the European Parliament was formed in Strasbourg. The parliament meets once per month in Strasbourg and Nomanda is willing to bet that as well as the 785 elected MEP’s there will be at least three times that number of “hangers on” to support these very important people. Of course most of the business of the EEC is conducted in Brussels and I guess the monthly jaunt to Strasbourg is to give our poor over worked representatives a change of scenery. What a complete and utter waste of tax payers’ money! If you are not happy with this arrangement then you can always contact your MEP and complain. Best of luck! The 785 MEP’s represent 342 million eligible voting members of the EEC and apart from increased taxes, what have we all got to show for it?

Something the world has got to show for the untidy working methods of Scotsman Alexander Fleming is the world’s first anti biotic, penicillin, that Fleming discovered on this day in 1928. The story goes that after returning from a long holiday he discovered a fungus growing on some of his cultures so he threw the whole lot into a disinfectant bath. Later he saw that a protective zone had grown around the bacteria and “Voila” as the French say, he discovered penicillin.

The Ryder Cup teams from the USA and Europe will be warming up for their next match that starts on the 19th September at the Valhalla Golf Club at Louisville, Kentucky. It is the premier golfing competition of the golfing calendar, held every two years and on this day in 1985 Europe beat the USA 16 1/2– 11 1/2 at the Belfry Golf Club in England. Best of luck to both teams and Nomanda looks forward to the Cup coming back to Europe next week!

Young Tom is sharing his birthday today with one of the most popular detective and thriller novelists and playwrights of all time, Agatha Christie (1890 – 1976). The 80 detective novels she has written have been translated into 56 languages and the total sales of her works are around 4 billion. Only the sales of the Bible surpass her total individual sales and that has been around a lot longer! Agatha introduced the characters “Inspector Poirot” and “Miss Jane Marple” to the world and her play “The Mousetrap” that opened at the Ambassadors Theatre in London on 25th November 1952 is still going strong after over 23,000 performances. Quite a lady!

When Tom grows up he will be happy to learn that he shares his birthday with Graham Jones (1944), the English football coach and also with Tommy Lee Jones (1946) the “Fugitive” who’s always on the run!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
