Gemstone of the Month

Flower of the Month: Gladiolus

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Almost 50 years before the 4 gold medals won by Carl Lewis at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 another top American athlete was on his way to making history at the 1936 Olympic Games held in Berlin. It was on this day in 1936 that Jesse Owens picked up his 4th gold medal winning the same 4 events as his illustrious successor; 100 metres, 200 metres, the long jump and the 4 x 100 metre relay race. Despite the snub the world press attributed to Hitler in not presenting him with his medals Jesse believed that he received a greater snub from the American president Franklin D Roosevelt who didn’t even acknowledge his achievements!

Another outstanding athlete, Chris Old, the English cricket all rounder made a century for Yorkshire against Warwickshire in just 37 minutes on this day in 1977. In fact the last 50 runs came in just 9 minutes! In the 46 Test matches he played for his country he took 143 wickets at an average of 28.11 runs. During his school days Nomanda had the privilege of playing both cricket and rugby against the Old brothers (elder brother Alan) and I’m pretty sure we never won a match against their school when the two of them turned out! They were awesome together!

Turning out completely naked were the sun lovers of Brighton where the UK’s first nudist beach was opened on this day in 1979. As far as Nomanda can remember most of the beaches at Brighton are made of pebbles so it must have all been a bit uncomfortable sunning oneself without any knickers on! Good place to get stoned!

Reaching the end of his cricketing Test career David Gower turned out for the last time for his country on this day in 1992. In the 117 Test matches he played he scored 8231 runs at an average of 44.25. Very respectable indeed! In fact he has a best Test bowling record of 1 for 1 but didn’t make a habit of it as he only bowled a total of 36 balls for his country and never took another wicket. He now does an outstanding commentating job for the BBC. Very nice guy!

The outstanding actor Robert Shaw (1927 – 1978) is first up for birthday honours today. If you want to see him at his best see “From Russia With Love”, the “Battle of the Bulge” or “The Sting”. All great films!

Rated one of the best tennis players of all time the Australian Rod Laver (1938) will be having a few “coolies” with his mates today. He dominated the men’s’ tennis scene in the late ‘60’s and is the only person to have twice won all four Grand Slams in the same year.

Our final birthday wishes go to the lovely French actress Audrey Tautou (1978). She’s great as Sophie Neveu in the “Da Vinci Code”!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
