Flower of the Month

Gemstone of the Month: Agate

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

I suppose it’s every priest’s ambition to ascend to a higher plane and on this day in 1709 the Brazilian born priest Bartolomeu de Gusmao achieved his goal in the Casa de India in Lisbon becoming the first man to go up in a hot air balloon. The King and the court were so impressed with his performance that he was awarded a professorship and made a canon. I guess it was quite a spectacle but after all it was indoors and the ceilings can’t have been that high!

Sailing away to the far off island of St Helena Napoleon Bonaparte set off on his last voyage to begin his exile on this day in 1815. The voyage took 10 weeks and when he arrived the accommodation wasn’t ready for the great man. He stayed with a British family the Balcombes in their home called the “Briars” until his residence was completed. The Balcombes later moved to Melbourne, Australia and called their new home there the “Briars”. It is now a museum. Napoleon didn’t enjoy his time on St Helena and there was constant squabbling about the lack of food supplied. Well if a daily ration of 40 kilos of meat, 9 chickens and 17 bottles of wine (excluding champagne and spirits!) wasn’t enough to go round then maybe he had a case!

Not the most hospitable place in the world, St Helena, so even if he or any of his retinue were inclined for a spot of sunbathing I doubt whether they would have been sporting their “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” that hit the #1 spot on this day in 1960. Come to think of it the bikini hadn’t been invented yet!

In a curious case of musical discord it was on this day in 1964 that the Dutch Opera Company was formed in Amsterdam and on the very same day the Rolling Stones held their first Dutch Concert! I wonder if the opera company sang this one for them.

On the same day that Napoleon was being dispatched to St Helena, the hostage of the Shiite Moslems, John McCarthy was being released in 1991 after over 5 years in captivity. Nomanda’s research document spells Shiite with only one “i” but I think I’ve got it right!

The award winning actor Dustin Hoffman (1937) will be celebrating his 71st birthday today. How can he be that old? I’m sure he will have a great birthday party and reminisce about some of the films he’s made over his 40 year career and still going strong!

David Evans (1961) aka “The Edge” from U2 will probably be having an Irish birthday bash with his friends today. Let's hear it from them!

Carol Lewis (1963), the younger sister of brother Carl (not much imagination in choosing your kids’ names, parents!) will be celebrating her birthday today and no doubt remembering the 1984 Olympics when she came 9th in the high jump whilst on this day big brother Carl won his 3rd gold medal at those Games. Athletic family!

The English fast bowler Angus Fraser (1965) will be limbering up for his birthday bash today. He took 177 wickets in his 46 Test Matches at an average of just 27.32. Hot stuff!

Lorraine Pearson (1967) from the group Five Star will be singing along with her brothers and sisters at her birthday party today so let’s hear it from 5 Star!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
