Gemstone of the Month

Flower of the Month: Larkspur

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Great feats of endurance have always been a popular topic for Nomanda and few can have been as amazing as the end of the first, and last, round the world motor car race that finished in Paris on this day in 1908, six months after setting off from New York. The route for the six starting teams went from New York – Chicago – San Francisco – by boat to Japan then driving through Japan – by boat to Vladivostok - Siberia – Manchuria – Russia – Germany – Paris. It makes me breathless just thinking about it, especially when you think about the sort of cars they were driving and the “road” conditions at the time! Not too many petrol stations around either! Three teams made it all the way. What a fantastic achievement, well done to one and all!

Nomanda loves reading so join with me today in celebrating the publication of the first Penguin paperback book that took place on this day in 1935. The company, Penguin Books, founded by Allen Lane was to start the paperback revolution and in only 10 months after the publication of its first book it had already printed a million! The pricing policy of those first editions is interesting as the price of 6d was the same price as a packet of cigarettes. Clever fellow and Happy Days, indeed!

The infamous smoker, drinker and spy, Kim Philby, surfaced in Moscow on this day in 1963. He had disappeared from Beirut on January 23 1963 whilst awaiting further interrogation and it took the British authorities 6 months to “find” him. Of course he was now out of reach!

Having “lost” Philby both MI5 and MI6 were probably singing along with the Beatles’ song “Yesterday” that shot to the #1 spot on this day in 1966 and stayed there for 5 weeks.

Shooting his way into the record books on this day in 1988 Harry Drake shot an arrow an amazing 1873 metres on the Ninety Mile Beach, New Zealand. He used a foot bow and the super thin arrows had razor blades for flights. He let fly three arrows before the bow broke and only one arrow was found. I wonder how far the other two flew!

If you are lucky enough to have your birthday today then I can tell you that you in some very illustrious company!

First up for birthday honours is the celebrated sculptor Henry Moore (1989 – 1986). His sculptures can be seen in public places all over the world. Not bad for the son of a Yorkshire mining engineer!

The entrepreneur and inventor Clive Sinclair is our next birthday boy (1940). He has invented many things from pocket calculators to cheap computers but Nomanda’s favourite has to be the silly car on bicycle wheels, the C5! Sadly not one of his great successes! If this was the best of the bunch I wonder what happened to the C1C4 models!

The Canadian singer and songwriter Paul Anka (1941) gets our birthday wishes today. I hope “Diana” is there to share his party with him today!

The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger (1947) is our next birthday boy. With a career covering body building, acting and now public office you have to admit that “Arnie” has done it all and has had his share of good fortune along the way! Apparently he has been named in 2004 and 2007 as one of “Time 100” people who have helped shaped the world. That gives Nomanda cold comfort!

Kate Bush and Daley Thompson share their birthday on this day in 1958. Kate has written and sung some great songs so let’s hear one from her. And Daley won two consecutive gold Olympic medals in the decathlon at the 1980 and 1984 events. A great athlete!

Our final birthday wishes go to the lovely Lisa Kudrow (1963) who as Phoebe Buffay is Nomanda’s favourite “Friend”! She speaks fluent French, writes songs and plays the guitar a bit too! Talented lady, have a look at this!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
