The Vatican was at it again on this day in 1663 when they forced Galileo to recant his theory that the earth revolves around the sun. His theory was considered “heretical”, i.e. contrary to the church’s teaching, and the great man just escaped with his life. He was however placed under house arrest by the Inquisition and spent the rest of his days in confinement. Had the great man lived another 329 years he would have had the satisfaction of hearing the Vatican admitting it was wrong in 1992! Thanks, guys!



The world’s greatest escape artist, Harry Houdini, married his wife, Bessie Rahner, on this day in 1894. Bess was to be his stage assistant for the rest of his career. They were a devoted couple and those people who say that his marriage was the only thing that he couldn’t get out of are just being mean!



It was in this day in 1979 that the guy considered by many to be the father of Rock and Roll, Little Richard, decided to abandon his amazing music career and to take up the faith as a born again Christian. Happily for his fans he has been in and out of the bible punching and rock and roll careers ever since. He still performs some of his great old stuff mixed in with a few evangelical renditions. Well if we can’t have it all we’d rather have a bit of you rocking than none at all!



First up for birthday honours today is Peter Asher (1944) whose success with his group Peter and Gordon may have had as much to do with his sister’s boyfriend, Paul McCartney, than their own natural musical talent! Their best known record “World Without Love” was a pressie to them from the Beatles!



The multi award winning actress, Meryl Streep (1949) is our next birthday celebrity. A great actress with a list of films and starring roles that reads like the best films ever! “Kramer versus Kramer”, “Out of Africa” and “The Manchurian Candidate” are just some of Nomanda’s favourites!



Mike Edwards (1964) the vocalist from the group Jesus Jones will be having a birthday bash with a few friends today. Careful who you invite, Mike, better “the Devil you Know” than a load of gatecrashers!




Our final birthday tribute goes to Tommy Cunningham from the group Wet Wet Wet, and Nomanda is “Wishing I Was” invited to the bash!

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!
