14 June - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Gemstone of the Month: Pearl

First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Get you oars out, flex your muscles, and prepare yourself for the boating event of the year at Henley. The Henley Royal Regatta, to give it its proper name, was first held on this day in 1834 and has been an annual event ever since. From the humble beginnings of the one day event in its first year it now lasts five day and is one of the social events of the year. International teams from all over the world compete at this prestigious event. If you get the chance to attend it will be held this year 1 - 5 July. Don’t forget the sun cream as it should be full summer in the UK by then!

Heating things up in his lab and on the school desktops in chemistry labs throughout the world ever since was Robert von Bunsen who invented the “Bunsen Burner” on this day in 1847. Nomanda’s school chemistry lab was equipped with these and they were great to warm your hands on during long boring chemistry lessons! For some reason they always seemed to be turned on, merrily flickering away!

Fluttering his little eyelashes and winning friends on the release of his movie on this day in 1942 was one of our favourite Disney characters, Bambi. Everybody loves him!

The Dutch military personnel were dressing to impress on this day in 1968 as they celebrated this day when they were permitted to wear “regular clothing” when off duty. Nomanda knows a thing or two about the Dutch and has to admit that fancy dress sense isn’t one of their national characteristics that immediately spring to mind. That is if you exclude cross dressing and other such apparel! My advice is to stick to the camouflage suits and orange t-shirts!

Our birthday boy would be happy in a nice frock as born on this day in 1955 was comedian and cross dresser Paul O’Grady. His alter ego, Lily Savage, is a blond bombshell. Lily disappeared into a French convent in 2004 having “seen the light”. However more recently she has been reported as having escaped from the convent. Does this mean she’s on her way back?

Birthday wishes today also go to one of the best lady tennis players of our generation, Steffi Graf, who was born on this day in 1969. During her 17 year professional career she knocked up 22 Grand Slam titles and is now happily married to another famous tennis star, Andre Agassi. We wish them both well!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
